U Sports – U SPORTS Top 10 Tuesday:
Cape Breton opens at No.1 in men’s soccer for second straight year
August 27, 2019

TORONTO (U SPORTS) – For the second consecutive season, the Cape Breton Capers are the top-ranked men’s soccer squad to open the new campaign

After capturing their first Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy with a 3-2 victory over Montreal in the 2017 national final on penalty kicks, the Capers took home silver last November, after narrowly falling 2-1 in extra time in a dramatic rematch with the Carabins.

The Capers visit Saint Mary’s and Moncton this week in preseason action before hosting the UNB Reds in their home opener on Sept. 7. Montreal, who last held the pole position on Oct. 17, 2017, rank No.2 to start the year, after coming into last year’s tournament ranked No.5 and rising three spots en route to the title.

The Carabins begin their title defence at home Wednesday against Sherbrooke – the first step on the road to hosting this year’s U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at CEPSUM. The regular season got underway on Friday with a full slate of Canada West action

The first Top 10 rankings for women’s soccer, along with women’s rugby will be announced next Tuesday, following the start of the regular season in both sports. Click here for this week’s Football Top 10 rankings.

For the second straight season, U SPORTS is using the ELO Rating System for the calculation of its weekly national rankings. Powered by RankR, ELO’s unique algorithm blends a statistical calculation with customized variables that is adaptable across a range of sports. For more information, click here.
