Diving Canada – Toth and Thach Mai advance to finals at FINA Grand Prix

 

BOLZANO, Italy – Celina Toth of St. Thomas, Ont., and Peter Thach Mai of Montreal are headed to finals after solid performances Friday to open the fifth stop on the FINA Grand Prix circuit.

 

On women’s 10-metre tower, Toth placed first in the preliminary round with 321.90 points and then was second in her semifinal heat with 287.45. Sarah Jodoin di Maria of Italy was first with 298.30. Minje Zhang of China won the other semifi with 288.60.

 

‘’I was hoping to do better in the semis but overall it was pretty good,’’ said Toth ‘’I came here not thinking about results specifically but really focusing on improving certain aspects I’ve been working on.’’

 

Toth wasn’t feeling 100 percent confident heading into the annual outdoor competition held in comfortable conditions today.

 

‘’It was a rough week in training,’’ she admitted. ‘’I’m not sure what was going on because this is my favorite venue. But it was frustrating. I was hoping I would be sparked by being in a competition today and that’s what happened.’’

 

The top-12 from the prelims advance to the semis and are split into two heats. The top-three from each semis advanced to Saturday”s final.

 

On men’s three-metre, Thach Mai was fourth in the prelims with 376.55 and Ryan Grover of Barrie, Ont., also advanced to the semis placing 11th.

 

Thach Mai was second in his semifinal heat with 391.95 behind China’s Xiaohu Tai at 446.10. Grover was sixth in the same semi and ranked 11th overall.

 

‘’I was pleased with my improvement in semis,’’ said Thach Mai. ‘’I corrected some errors with my finish, in particular the entries, and I need to do that even better in the final.’’
