ROSTOCK, Germany – Celina Toth of St. Thomas, Ont., and Elaena Dick of Edmonton advanced to the semifinals on women’s 10-m tower and Thomas Ciprik of Pointe-Claire, Que., did the same on men’s three-metre Thursday to open the second stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit.
In the women’s tower preliminaries, Christina Wassen of Germany topped the 19-diver field with 327.75 points. Gemma McArthur of Britain was second at 303.95 and her compatriot Andrea Spendolini Sirieix third at 302.30.
Toth, fourth last weekend as the opening stop in Madrid, stands fourth at 300.90 just ahead of Dick in fifth at 300.65.
In the last round, Toth’s back three and half received mixed reviews with one judge scoring a 5.0 and another a 7.5. Still that was encouraging for Toth.
‘’This was a good start to the event, much better than last week,’’ she said. ‘’I put some good things down in the prelims and feel much more confident. I was really pleased with my back three and half which had been giving me some grief. There’s still dives to improve but that gives me focus and motivation for the semis.’’
Dick, who turned 21 last week, was making her season debut and felt a bit nervous.
‘’I held back on the first two dives and wound up landing them short,’’ she said. ‘’But I’m happy with my last three dives. I’ll be more confident in the semis and hope to maintain that through the whole competition.
The top-12 advanced to Friday’s semis.
On men’s three-metre prelims, the British are standing 1-2 with Anthony Harding first and James Heatly second. Andrew Capobianco of the U.S. is third.
Ciprik just made the cut ranking 12th. Cedric Fofana of Quebec City was 19th.
Competition continues through to Sunday.
