The true value of being an athlete is to chase a dream, while being surrounded by incredible teammates, coaches, and staff, all chasing the same thing together. That bond, that strength in unity is something that is hard to define. Seeing Team Canada in action is truly beautiful, they are at the peak of their training, and have come here to compete for gold.
To become a world class athlete requires an abundance of hard work, determination, talent and plenty of support. These athletes typically have teams of coaches, sports scientists, nutritionists, physiotherapists and psychologists working with them, but at times a simple hug or words of support from a family member can be invaluable. So many well-wishers, families, friends, partners, parents and grandparents, have made the trip to Finland for these World Ringette Championships, to show their support. Being part of the support system to an elite athlete is not an easy job. Aside from the obvious financial and logistical help, it’s important to know when to step in and offer emotional support and when to step back and let others take over. For most athletes continued support is crucial and plays a large part in their success. What we can be sure of is that we will see some very proud faces in Espoo, an event which for many will be the culmination of many years of very hard work and commitment for both athlete and family.
Many Canadian athletes have been here before. They have come to the World Ringette Championships and left broken hearted, they have come to the World Ringette Championships and come back as champions. Today, Canada sits on an important precipice of these finals. Both Junior and Senior National Teams have faced off against some very robust competition, but so far, it has been in exhibition games. They have had some very tough matches and a few setbacks. But more importantly, they have also shown their grit, as well as moments of pure joy and absolute brilliance.
But the most important task still lies ahead of them.
It is still all to play for.
It is still anyone’s game.
