Sport Law & Strategy Group Shares Highlight from Conversation Matters – You Ask, We Share!

September 17, 2020 –The SLSG renewed its commitment to connect with the sport community yesterday through its monthly “Conversation Matters: You Ask, We Share”, spending an hour with sport leaders from across the country sharing information and responding to questions on employment, insurance, leadership, financial management, grief management, and other matters related to managing through COVID-19. Here’s what SLSG Partners Steve Indig and Dina Bell-Laroche had to share:

  • We opened with a team check-in tool that was designed by SLSG Integral Sport Coach Stephanie Potter and invited participants to share what state they were in. A simple tool like the Team Check-In can provide leaders with an opportunity to add a humanistic way to connect with their team, family and friends.
  • We shared the work we have been doing to support clients in a Holistic Return to Sport  . If you are curious about ways to ensure your coaches, athletes, staff and volunteers are coping in healthy and healing ways, please connect with Dina at DBL@sportlaw.ca. Some of the coping strategies that were shared by participants included walking, taking a pause, gaining perspective, spending time with kids and family, nature, working out, and reading. What’s your way of coping?
  • We shared some of the success strategies that some leaders have adopted to use this Pause to invest in their people through proactive leadership development work. Some of these great initiatives included the NOVA Profile, an engaging psychometric tool that was first introduced in sport in 2017 at the inaugural Sport Leaders Retreat. Since then, hundreds of sport leaders have used the tool to increase self-awareness, strengthen their team, and improve communications.
  • For some of the highlights on all things legal, you’ll want to listen to our recording as Steve had lost of great information to share about insurance, government regulations, trends in the sector, waivers, the impact of not being incorporated and ways to mitigate litigation, particularly in a COVID-19 environment.

Our high hopes for the sector are to re-imagine new ways to deal with the stuff that might be keeping you up at night and in so doing, feel less alone as a result. If COVID-19 has taught us anything it’s that we need each other more than ever to work through some of the complexities of leading, living, competing and volunteering in the 21st Century.
