Sport Calgary’s Annual General Meeting to Feature Pro Footballer, Two Olympians and City Councillor Discussing Individual Career ‘Pathways Through Sport’

Pro footballer, Farkhunda Muhtaj, Olympian Kalleigh Ryan and Councillor Jasmine Mian headline annual sport celebration

CALGARY—After delivering a progress report to Calgary’s sport community, three-time Olympic medallist and the president and CEO of Sport Calgary, Catriona Le May Doan, will host a panel discussion featuring a trio of Calgary leaders who will share their “Pathways Through Sport” that has enabled them to make a positive impact on their communities.

The Annual General Meeting event will be held, April 23 at 11 a.m. MDT, at the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.

Farkhunda Muhtaj, a professional footballer/community ambassador with the newly formed Calgary Wild FC and a social activist, will bridge the worlds of sport, education and humanitarianism while sharing her journey that includes captaining the Afghanistan Women’s National Football Team. Muhtaj has used sport to support the settlement of refugees in Canada. She founded Ayenda, the unofficial Afghan Youth National Football Team, in 2021 following her evacuation of over 300 Afghans, including members of the Afghanistan Youth National Team, to Portugal after the Taliban’s return to power.

Kelleigh Ryan, a 2020 Olympian in the sport of fencing who was part of the gold-medal winning team at the 2025 Pan Am Games, is now coaching at Epic Fencing Club while running an online strength and conditioning business specifically for fencers.

Councillor Jasmine Mian, a second generation Canadian who competed for Canada at the 2016 Olympics in wrestling was the youngest woman ever elected to Calgary City Council at 31 years old. Following her retirement from sport, Mian continued her involvement in sports as a Board member for Wrestling Canada, in addition to volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada and Ask Her YYC. Struck by a driver when she was four years old, Mian has also been passionate about raising awareness around pedestrian and road safety. Other areas of her focus in office include public transportation and recreation, while also spearheading Calgary’s first multisport recreation complex as chair of the Calgary Multisport Fieldhouse Committee.
