Softball Canada Announces New Safe Sport Programming

Ottawa, Ont. – Following the 2019 Red Deer declaration for the prevention of harassment, abuse and discrimination in Sport, Softball Canada, in partnership with Sport Canada, is pleased to announce the official launch of its new Safe Sport programming.

Designed to act as a foundation that helps prevent and address maltreatment, Softball Canada’s commitment to Safe Sport focuses on providing safe, welcoming, and accessible sport environments.

“With collaboration from our Provincial/Territorial Associations, Softball Canada has been able to develop and implement numerous initiatives aimed at keeping softball safe for all athletes, coaches, umpires, administrators and support staff,” said Kristin Noonan, Softball Canada’s Safe Sport Lead and Manager of Coaching Services. “Creating a harmonized approach to safe sport, developing and revising applicable policies, and the creation of a third-party reporting mechanism are among the many projects planned.”

Softball Canada places the highest priority on member safety and is working to create environments free from maltreatment, giving access to an independent third party, and providing mandatory training.

Softball Canada is also very proud to promote Safe Sport initiatives in some of the following ways:

  • Distribution of Anti-harassment signage to each Province/Territory & at Canadian Championships
  • Providing Provincial/Territorial Associations with access to Respect in the Workplace training
  • A complete Safe Sport policy suite
  • A clear and concise Reporting Pathway
  • Promotion on Concussion Safety with a focus on changing behaviours (coming soon)
  • Production of a Safe Sport Public Service Announcement (PSA)

As a way of supporting our Safe Sport initiatives in the future, Softball Canada would encourage you to fill out the following member survey. This survey will help Softball Canada and the Provincial/Territorial Associations support our values of believing in providing fair and inclusive access, supporting safe and fun environments and operating with respect and integrity.

Going forward, targeted investments, strong partnerships and a collective commitment from members will help Softball Canada continue to foster safe, healthy and inclusive programming.
