Seven Canadians Qualified for Either Semi-Finals or Finals on the First day of Athletics Competition on Monday in Bochum

Seven Canadians qualified for either semi-finals or finals on the first day of Athletics competition on Monday in Bochum. 

Vivian Ogor (London, Ont. / Western University) and Travis Campbell (Toronto, Ont. / University of Guelph) will compete for gold tomorrow in the women’s and men’s 100m respectively, while Liv Sands (Toronto, Ont./ Western University) and Hannah Hagerty (Saskatoon, SK./ University of Saskatchewan) advanced to tomorrow’s final in shot put and long jump. 

Canada also made major noise in 400m events. Benjamin Tilson (Windsor, Ont. / University of Windsor) qualified for Tuesday’s 400m hurdle semi-finals in the first race of the day, while Favour Okpali (London, Ont. / Western University) and Paige Willems (Saskatoon, SK. / University of Saskatchewan) did the same in the women’s 400m. 

Overall, 15 Canadians took part in events throughout the day, with four surging to personal bests. Tilson ran to a new standard of 50.86 seconds in the 400m hurdles, and David Moulongou (Ottawa, Ont. / University of Ottawa) did the same one heat later, in a new best of 52.24 seconds. 

Keshawn Igbinosun (Toronto, Ont. / Brock University) also ran a personal best in the men’s 400m, at 47.75 seconds, and Hagerty leaped to a record of 6.28m. 

Action continues tomorrow with 11 Canadians competing. The women’s shot put final is at 6:23 and the women’s long jump final begins at 7:51 pm, while the women’s and men’s 100m finals conclude the day at 9:25 and 9:40 pm, respectively.
