Researchers at Queen’s University launch study on Transformational Leadership in Coaching

What does it mean to be an effective coach? Research shows that effective coaching involves what coaches do and say, but also how they deliver it. In other words, effective coaching involves a high level of professional—or sport-specific—knowledge, but also the interpersonal skills to communicate that knowledge effectively.

A new study from researchers at Queen’s University is investigating how those interpersonal coaching skills can positively impact youth athletes’ motivation, enjoyment, and overall sport experience. Led by Dr. Jean Côté, the Performance Lab for the Advancement of Youth in Sport (PLAYS) is looking for sport organizations and clubs who are interested in learning about how their athletes experience their coaches’ leadership styles.

Interested organizations would be asked to share information about the study with athletes between the ages of 13 and 19 who participate in team sports and train with a coach at least twice weekly. Participating athletes would complete a brief 15-minute questionnaire about their experiences with coaching leadership styles, motivation, and general feelings towards their sport. All responses are anonymous, and the study has received ethical approval from Queen’s University General Research Ethics Board.

Organizations with 10 or more athletes completing the survey will receive an individualized summary report detailing the study’s findings for their team. By supporting this research, coaches and organizations can contribute to a deeper understanding of how leadership impacts athletes, while also potentially gaining strategies to improve their own coaching methods.

For more information, interested coaches, clubs, and organizations can check out full details on the PLAYS website, or contact the study lead at Stuart.wilson@queensu.ca
