Registration is Open – 2022 Ottawa Sport Summit: Creating Diverse and Inclusive Sport Environments

The Ottawa Sport Council is pleased to announce registration is open for the Ottawa Sport Summit – Creating Diverse and Inclusive Sport Environments. The workshop will be hosted on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Nepean Sailing Club.

The Power of Sport: The True Sport Report 2022 indicates that 85% of Canadians believe sport participation builds stronger communities, but the report also shows that equity-deserving groups reported participating in sport at a lower rate than the Canadian average. For example, racialized individuals reported participation rates of 25.2% compared to the average participation rate of 26.7% in Canada.

Additionally, when individuals are members of more than one equity-deserving group, it can result in the amplification of barriers to participation in sport. Equity-deserving groups can include visible minorities, individuals with physical disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, indigenous communities, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

Facilitated by Ottawa Sport Council Board Member, and community sport leader, Shamir Kanji in partnership with Andrea Carey, Founder and Chief Inclusion Officer of INclusion INcorporated, the sport summit will use a facilitated workshop format to allow participants to answer the following key questions:

  • What are the lived experiences in sport of equity-deserving groups in Ottawa?
  • What are the barriers to participation in sport faced by equity-deserving groups in Ottawa?
  • What information, resources, and support do community sport organizations need to create positive and meaningful sport experiences for marginalized communities?

Registration:

This is a free event. We do ask participants to consider making a minimum $35 donation to the Ottawa Sport Council Foundation. The Ottawa Sport Council Foundation has been created to provide sporting organizations with grants to improve inclusion in sport. Tax receipts will be provided.

The goal of this workshop is to identify barriers to participation for equity-deserving groups. As such, our recommendation is that, where possible, organizations attend with up to 3 representatives (board members, staff, key volunteers) with different lived experiences to offer a variety of perspectives throughout the day.
