Recurve athletes shoot at 2022 Buckeye Classic

DUBLIN, OH – The Buckeye Classic had some great Canadian performances, from both our National and Development squads. In the recurve senior men category, Crispin Duenas, Devaang Gupta, and Andrew Smollett came 7th, 8th, and 9th, respectively. Reece Wilson-Poyton came in 21st, while Dawson Oderkirk finished 37th to round out the group. In the recurve U21 men’s division, Ben Lee came in second, after a strong first half. His teammate Jules Chouinard came 10th in the group, with Matthew Thomas and Dylan Villanueva coming 18th and 20th. Ryan Mahoney rounded out this group with a finish in 31st place. Natalee Chan was the highest Canadian finisher in the recurve U21 women’s division, with an 11th place seeding. Amelia Gagne was only two places behind in 13th, while Charlise Corona earned the 19th spot. Brianna DeZeeuw placed 22nd in the division. In the U18 men’s division, Geon (Joseph) Kim landed 48th and was the only Canadian in his category. In the similar women’s category, Janna Hawash earned the 11th spot and Audrey Khan Arevalo shot a score landing her in the 22nd place

In the elimination round, Oderkirk tied one end but lost his first match at the conclusion. Wilson-Poyton won his match conclusively with a final score of 7-1, and then won his second match with 7 points over his opponent’s 3 points. He was then unable to advance past the 1/8th round, losing 6-2. Duenas won his match against an archer from Missouri with a score of 6-0, and then carried on to win his second match 6-3. Unfortunately, he was not able to advance past the 1/8th round where he lost against Matthew Nofel of Colorado. Smollett won his first round 6-0, also winning his second match with that score. Gupta also won his first match in a decisive manner with a score of 6-0. He carried on his successful shooting with a second match score of 6-0. Gupta and Smollett then met in the ⅛ round, with Gupta coming out on top with a score of 6-0. The only Canadian to advance this far in the competition, he tied the first three ends of his quarterfinal match, and then continued to shoot strong to win the match. This advanced him to the semifinals, where he faced Jackson Mirich and had to go to a tiebreaker as both archers had 5 set points by the end. Unfortunately, he did not win the tough tiebreaker, but it meant that he was able to advance to the bronze medal match. Gupta shot well in the bronze medal match, however, he came up short in the end, with the final score 6-4 in favour of Jack Williams.

All the Canadians in the U21 men’s category (Lee, Mahoney, Thomas, Chouinard and Villanueva) all received a bye to the 1/16th round. Villanueva lost his first match 7-1, while Chouinard emerged decisively victorious in his match. Because of illness, Lee was unable to compete, so Mahoney automatically won their matchup. Thomas lost his first match, not advancing further. Chouinard and Mahoney continued their strong shooting, both of them moving on from their second match onto the quarterfinals. They came face to face in the next match; Chouinard was the winner in the end. Unfortunately, he was unable to overcome his opponent in the semifinal match, so moved onto the bronze medal match. Even though he then lost the next match, Chouinard finished the tournament in fourth place. 

Gagne unfortunately lost her first match in the U21 women’s division, with an incredibly close score of 5-6. Corona also lost her first match. Chan and DeZeeuw faced off in their first match; while it was a close match of 6-4, Chan emerged the winner and moved on in the competition. She was then unable to win her next match, dropping it with a score of 4-6. 

In the recurve U18 men’s category, Kim was unfortunately unable to win his match. Both Hawash and Khan Arevalo were able to advance past their first match in the U18 women’s division. The two of them faced off and Khan Arevalo moved on, unfortunately then losing her next match. 

Shawn Riggs, one of the coaches attending with the athletes, summarized the competition. “Jules Chouinard had a good day, finishing fourth overall; he was our top performer. Unfortunately, Ben was out with illness and wasn’t able to compete. Jules beat Ryan Mahoney from QC in the quarters, before moving onto the semis where he had a close match, losing to the eventual winner. He wasn’t able to win the bronze medal match, but we’re quite happy with his finish. Audrey Khan Arevalo won two matches and we had a number of archers win one match, so it’s a little lower performance than we’d expect, but certainly nice to see them win one match. On the senior men’s side, qualifications went quite well. Andrew Smollett tied his personal best, Devaang Gupta shot well and at the end of the day we had three men qualify in the top 10, including Crispin Duenas. Our three men qualified in consecutive order. At times, they were all mixed up, so it was fun to watch yesterday. Conditions were really good, and no reason not to have high scores which led to Andrew Smollett’s high score.”

Les athlètes d’arc recourbé tirent à la Buckeye Classic 2022

DUBLIN, OH – La Classique Buckeye a connu d’excellentes performances canadiennes, tant de la part de nos athlètes nationales que de celles de développement. Dans la catégorie des hommes séniors d’arc recourbés, Crispin Duenas, Devaang Gupta et Andrew Smollett ont terminé respectivement 7e, 8e et 9e. Reece Wilson-Poyton a terminé 21e, tandis que Dawson Oderkirk a terminé 37e pour compléter le groupe. Dans la division U21 arc recourbé masculine, Ben Lee a terminé en deuxième position, après une forte première mi-temps. Son coéquipier Jules Chouinard a terminé 10e du groupe, tandis que Matthew Thomas et Dylan Villanueva ont terminé 18e et 20e. Ryan Mahoney a complété ce groupe en terminant à la 31e place. Natalee Chan a obtenu la meilleure place canadienne dans la division des femmes U21 d’arc recourbé, avec une 11e place. Amelia Gagne n’était que deux places derrière en 13e position, tandis que Charlise Corona a obtenu la 19e place. Brianna DeZeeuw s’est classée 22e dans cette division. Chez les hommes de moins de 18 ans, Geon (Joseph) Kim s’est classé 48e et était le seul Canadien dans sa catégorie. Dans la catégorie féminine similaire, Janna Hawash a obtenu la 11e place et Audrey Khan Arevalo a obtenu un score qui lui a permis de se classer au 22e rang.

Dans la ronde éliminatoire, Oderkirk a fait match nul à une volée, mais a perdu son premier match à la fin Wilson-Poyton a gagné son match de manière concluante avec un score final de 7-1, et a ensuite remporté son deuxième match avec 7 points contre 3 pour son adversaire. Il n’a ensuite pas pu dépasser les ⅛ de finale, perdant 6-2. Duenas a gagné son match contre un archer du Missouri avec un score de 6-0, et a ensuite gagné son deuxième match 6-3. Malheureusement, il n’a pas pu passer le ⅛ de finale où il a perdu contre Matthew Nofel du Colorado. Smollett a gagné sa première ronde 6-0, et a également gagné son deuxième match avec ce score. Gupta a également remporté son premier match de manière décisive avec un score de 6-0. Il a poursuivi sur sa lancée en remportant son deuxième match sur le score de 6-0. Gupta et Smollett se sont ensuite rencontrés dans le ⅛ de finale, et Gupta s’est imposé avec un score de 6-0. Seul Canadien à se rendre aussi loin dans la compétition, il a fait match nul dans les trois premières volées de son quart de finale, puis a continué à tirer fort pour gagner le match. Il a ainsi accédé à la demi-finale, où il a affronté Jackson Mirich et a dû recourir à un bris d’égalité, les deux archers ayant eu cinq points de manche à la fin du match. Malheureusement, il n’a pas remporté le brise d’égalité serré, mais cela lui a permis d’accéder au match pour la médaille de bronze. Gupta a bien tiré dans le match de la médaille de bronze, mais il n’a pas réussi à s’imposer à la fin, le score final étant de 6-4 en faveur de Jack Williams.

Tous les Canadiens de la catégorie masculine U21 (Lee, Mahoney, Thomas, Chouinard et Villanueva) ont reçu un bye pour le 1/16 de finale. Villanueva a perdu son premier match 7-1, tandis que Chouinard a remporté son match de façon décisive. En raison d’une maladie, Lee n’a pas pu participer à la compétition, et Mahoney a donc automatiquement remporté leur match. Thomas a perdu son premier match et n’est pas allé plus loin. Chouinard et Mahoney ont poursuivi leurs bons tirs, tous deux passant de leur deuxième match aux quarts de finale. Ils se sont retrouvés face à face dans le match suivant, et c’est Chouinard qui a fini par l’emporter. Malheureusement, il n’a pas été en mesure de vaincre son adversaire en demi-finale, ce qui l’a conduit au match pour la médaille de bronze. Même s’il perd le match suivant, Chouinard termine le tournoi à la quatrième place.

Gagne a malheureusement perdu son premier match dans la division féminine U21, avec un score incroyablement serré de 5-6. Corona a également perdu son premier match. Chan et DeZeeuw se sont affrontées lors de leur premier match. Bien que le score ait été serré (6-4), Chan est sortie gagnante et a poursuivi sa route dans la compétition. Elle n’a pas été en mesure de remporter son match suivant, qu’elle a perdu sur le score de 4-6.

Dans la catégorie des hommes U18 d’arc recourbé, Kim n’a malheureusement pas pu gagner son match. Dans la division féminine U18, Hawash et Khan Arevalo ont toutes deux réussi à passer leur premier match. Les deux se sont affrontées et Khan Arevalo est passée, mais a malheureusement perdu son match suivant.

Shawn Riggs, l’un des entraîneurs présents avec les athlètes, a résumé la compétition. « Jules Chouinard a connu une bonne journée, terminant quatrième au classement général ; il était notre meilleur résultat. Malheureusement, Ben était malade et n’a pas pu participer à la compétition. Jules a battu Ryan Mahoney du Québec en quarts de finale, avant de passer en demi-finale où il a eu un match serré, perdant contre l’éventuel gagnant. Il n’a pas pu remporter le match pour la médaille de bronze, mais nous sommes assez satisfaits de son résultat. Audrey Khan Arevalo a gagné deux matchs et plusieurs archers ont gagné un match, donc c’est une performance un peu plus faible que ce à quoi nous nous attendions, mais c’est bien de les voir gagner un match. Du côté des hommes séniors, les qualifications se sont bien déroulées. Andrew Smollett a égalé son record personnel, Devaang Gupta a bien tiré et à la fin de la journée, nous avons eu trois hommes qualifiés dans le top 10, y compris Crispin Duenas. Nos trois hommes se sont qualifiés dans un ordre consécutif. Par moments, ils étaient tous mélangés, donc c’était amusant à regarder hier. Les conditions étaient vraiment bonnes, et il n’y avait aucune raison de ne pas avoir des scores élevés, ce qui a conduit au score élevé d’Andrew Smollett. »
