Pool play heating up at the Men’s Pan Am Cup

Volleyball Canada – Canada defeated by Cuba; Argentina up next

COLIMA, Mexico, June 18, 2019 – Cuba defeated Canada 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) on Monday evening at the Men’s Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico.

Cuba led in kills 31-28 and in serving points 5-2, Canada did better in blocks with an 8-6 margin. Cuba capitalized on 33 Canadian errors, allowing 20 points on their errors.

“We had some opportunities, but we were unable to stay focused and in control,” said Canada’s coach John Barrett, after the match against Cuba. “We are a young team with young players getting their first international experience, so the basic aspects of the game: serving, being focused at key moments takes a lot of work – time and experience is the only remedy to that.”

Cuba is undefeated in pool A with 2-0, Canada stands with 1-1 record (a win over Suriname and the loss to Cuba). The preliminary round in pool A concludes with Cuba facing Suriname (0-2) and Canada playing against defending champion Argentina (1-1).

Teams are distributed into three pools, with defending champion Argentina, Canada, Cuba and Suriname competing in Pool A; host Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago gather in Pool B, and Pool C consisting of Chile, Dominican Republic, Guatemala and United States.
