Pentathlon Canada qualifies 5 Entries for Modern Pentathlon at the upcoming Lima 2019 Pan American Games

Pentathlon Canada –  – Pentathlon Canada will be sending 3 Women and 2 Men to the Pan Am Games based on the Canadian team’s performance at the Pan American Championships Test Event in Lima Peru from November 27 to December 2, 2018.

At the Test Event, Pentathlon Canada fielded one of its largest Senior Teams ever with seven competitors in total.

Team Canada’s three women athletes were:

  • Shauna Biddulph (Calgary, Alberta)
  • Kelly Fitzsimmons (Toronto, Ontario)
  • Claire Samulak (Calgary, Alberta)
And four men:
  • Robert Bonomo (Cantley, Quebec)
  • Joel Riker-Fox (Calgary, Alberta)
  • Christopher Rudolph ( Orangeville, Ontario)
  • Garnett Stevens ( Rockland, Ontario).
The women competed in a direct-to-final competition. Canada demonstrated its prowess in the saddle with Shauna Biddulph capturing 1st place in the show jumping event. The performances of all three women were solid, and Canada received confirmation in December that they had qualified a third women’s spot for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. This a much coveted third entry as the event is a direct Olympic qualifier to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Results at this competition also count for world ranking points towards Olympic qualification.

The men had a longer journey, needing strong results in one of the two qualification divisions to advance to the finals.  All four men qualified.  Finals highlights included Robert Bonomo’s 1st place swim with a 1:54.25 for the 200 m freestyle event and Joel Riker-Fox’s perfect 300 points first place show jumping score, the only clear round of the day.

Relays followed the individual events. Canada achieved a third 1st place result in show jumping in the women’s relay (Shauna Biddulph and Claire Samulak). Back in the pool, Robert Bonomo and Garnett Steven posted the fastest time in the men’s relay – 1:50.49

Team Canada was led by National Team Coaches – Jane Rusconi and Bob Noble and assisted by Lauren Nethery.
