Wheelchair Basketball Canada – PEI MUSTANGS UNDEFEATED AFTER DAY 1 OF 2019 CANADIAN WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN CHARLOTTETOWN 

 Reigning Champions Gladiateurs de Laval also undefeated 

(April 26, 2019 – CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) – Hosts Prince Edward Island Mustangs went undefeated in their Tier 2 division on home turf in the opening day of competition on Friday at the 2019 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) National Championship in Charlottetown, PEI with a 3-0 record. 
 
“It’s pretty exciting going undefeated at home and being able to show the home crowd what we have been working towards these last couple of years,” says Westley Johnston of Team PEI. “Our core group of guys have been together for seven years and being able to show our province what we are able to do at the National level is a great thing.”
 
In Tier 1, reigning champions Gladiateurs de Laval (2-0) and Saskatchewan (1-1) finishes at the top of their respective pools and move on to semifinals.  
 
The three-day tournament is co-hosted by Wheelchair Basketball Canada and ParaSport and Recreation PEI and features eleven of the best wheelchair basketball club teams in Canada competing for the title of national champion in two tiers at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre in Charlottetown, PEI. The tournament is inclusive with athletes with and without a disability competing together on a level playing field. The round robin competition resumes Saturday, with the semi-finals starting at 2pm ADT.

About the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League
 
The Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) was founded in 1986 and has two primary divisions: the open division and the women’s division. The league features wheelchair basketball club teams from across Canada and culminates each season with a national championship for both the open and women’s divisions.
 
The league is fully integrated as both divisions welcome athletes with a disability as well as able-bodied athletes to play in the spirit of competition. It often features some of the country’s best wheelchair basketball players, including past, present and future members of Team Canada.
