Pan Am qualifications are wrapped in Santiago

SANTIAGO, CL – Qualifications have concluded at the Pan Am Championships in Santiago, Chile. The shooting line saw able-bodied archers yesterday from across the disciplines; the Parapan Am Championships saw archers having their official practice today and their qualification round will take place today. It was one of the hottest days that the archers have seen all year in competition. The winds also varied quite a bit throughout the day, it was off and on regularly throughout the ends.

The recurve men kicked off the day. Devaang Gupta was the top-ranked Canadian in this group and shot his best score of the year at 664 and earned a 6th place ranking. Brian Maxwell was right behind him, finishing 7th and with a total of 663 points. Eric Peters landed in the 10th spot on the ranking list, with a score of 658. Andrew Azores rounded out the men’s recurve group with a 26th spot in the rankings and a score of 637. Gupta and Maxwell received byes to the 1/16 elimination round; Azores and Peters earned themselves a bye to the 1/24 round. While it has yet to be determined who Peters will shoot against, Azores will be shooting against Luis Jaquez of Dominican Republic. The next matches for this group will take place on November 24, starting at 9:00 am local time (7:00 a.m. EST).

The Canadian male recurve team landed third, only 11 points behind the leader with a combined score of 1985. They will shoot against 14th-ranked Peru in the ⅛ elimination round on November 23 at 9:20 a.m. local time (7:20 a.m. EST). This event serves as an important qualifier for the Pan Am Games late next year and the top 5 teams at the end of the recurve competition qualify, so Canada is sitting in a good spot right now. The women’s team earned the 4th spot with a combined score of 1841; they’ll face off against the team from Panama, who ranked 13th in qualifications, in their first team match on Wednesday afternoon at 1:50 p.m. local time (11:50 a.m. EST). The recurve mixed team, which will be made up of the top Canadian scorers Brug and Gupta, were 6th after qualifications and their first opponent will be Ecuador. That match will take place on Saturday, November 26 at 10:15 a.m. local time (8:15 a.m. EST). 

Eleanor Brug was the top-ranking female Canadian recurve shooter, and shot a score of 621. This tied her for 8th place along with two other archers from Colombia and Mexico. Stephanie Barrett earned herself the 15th spot with a 611 and Virginie Chénier shot 609 points, which landed her in the 16th spot behind her teammate. The final Canadian archer in this group is Natalee Chan, who shot a score of 541 and has a 34th-place ranking. Due to some tied scores, this group will have some shoot-offs to determine final placements on Wednesday afternoon.

The compound men also took to the shooting line in the afternoon. Jordan Adachi earned the highest Canadian ranking in this division, with a score of 697 and the 11th place. Austin Taylor ranked 20th, shooting 72 arrows to get a final score of 693. Tristan Spicer-Moran and Cameron Palichuk earned the 31st and 35th spots with scores of 679 and 675, respectively. Just like the recurve women’s group, the compound men need to have some tie-breaker shoot-offs before final rankings can be determined.

“The venue and people here in Santiago have been great. The heat and wind got the better of a few of us,” commented Taylor after the day of qualifications. “It’s time to refocus and get ready for the team and individual matches in the coming days.”

Two barebow archers represented Canada in the women’s division. Brooke Daigle and Angela Foley were placed 15th and 16th, respectively. Daigle finished the 720 round with a score of 452; she faces off against Fawn Girard of the United States in her first elimination round on Thursday. Foley shot a score of 436 and will shoot against Chilean Nicole Tolmo. The match was originally scheduled to happen in the late afternoon of Tuesday, but due to technical issues the match was postponed.

Les qualifications panaméricaines se terminent à Santiago

SANTIAGO, CL – Les qualifications ont pris fin aux Championnats panaméricains à Santiago, au Chili. La ligne de tir a vu hier des archers valides de toutes les disciplines. Les Championnats parapanaméricains ont vu les archers avoir leur entraînement officiel aujourd’hui et leur tour de qualification aura lieu aujourd’hui. C’était l’une des journées les plus chaudes que les archers aient connues cette année en compétition. Les vents ont également varié assez fortement tout au long de la journée, avec des alternances régulières tout au long de la journée.

Les hommes d’arc recourbé ont donné le coup d’envoi de la journée. Devaang Gupta était le Canadien le mieux classé dans ce groupe et a réalisé son meilleur score de l’année avec 664 points, ce qui lui a valu une 6e place. Brian Maxwell était juste derrière lui, terminant 7e et avec un total de 663 points. Eric Peters a atterri au 10e rang de la liste de classement, avec un score de 658. Andrew Azores a complété le groupe des hommes recurve avec une 26e place au classement et un score de 637. Gupta et Maxwell ont reçu des exemptions pour la ronde élmiinatoire 1/16 ; Azores et Peters ont obtenu une exemption pour la ronde 1/24. Alors qu’il n’a pas encore été déterminé contre qui Peters tirera, Azores tirera contre Luis Jaquez de la République dominicaine. Les prochains matchs de ce groupe auront lieu le 24 novembre, à partir de 9h00, heure locale (7h00 HNE).

L’équipe masculine canadienne de tir à l’arc recourbé s’est classée troisième, à seulement 11 points du leader, avec un score combiné de 1985. Ils tireront contre le Pérou, 14e au classement, dans la ronde éliminatoire ⅛ le 23 novembre à 9h20, heure locale (7h20, HNE). Cet événement est une importante qualification pour les Jeux panaméricains qui se tiendront à la fin de l’année prochaine. Les cinq meilleures équipes à la fin de la compétition de tir à l’arc recourbé se qualifient, ce qui place le Canada dans une bonne position en ce moment. L’équipe féminine a obtenu la 4e place avec un score combiné de 1841 ; elle affrontera l’équipe du Panama, qui s’est classée 13e après les qualifications, dans son premier match par équipe mercredi après-midi à 13h50, heure locale (11h50 HNE). L’équipe mixte recurve, qui sera composée des meilleurs marqueurs canadiens Brug et Gupta, était 6e après les qualifications et son premier adversaire sera l’Équateur. Ce match aura lieu le samedi 26 novembre à 10h15, heure locale (8h15 HNE). 

Eleanor Brug a été la meilleure tireuse canadienne au recourbé, avec un score de 621. Elle s’est classée à égalité pour la 8e place avec deux autres archers de la Colombie et du Mexique. Stephanie Barrett s’est méritée la 15e place avec un pointage de 611 et Virginie Chénier a tiré 609 points, ce qui la place en 16e place derrière sa coéquipière. La dernière archère canadienne de ce groupe est Natalee Chan, qui a obtenu un score de 541 et occupe la 34e place. En raison de quelques égalités de points, ce groupe sera soumis à des tirs de barrage pour déterminer le classement final mercredi après-midi.

Les hommes d’arc à poulies ont également pris part à la séance de tir en après-midi. Jordan Adachi a obtenu le meilleur classement canadien dans cette division, avec un score de 697 et la 11e place. Austin Taylor s’est classé 20e, tirant 72 flèches pour obtenir un score final de 693. Tristan Spicer-Moran et Cameron Palichuk ont obtenu les 31e et 35e places avec des scores de 679 et 675, respectivement. Tout comme le groupe des femmes d’arc recourbé, les hommes d’arc à poulies doivent se départager avant que le classement final ne soit déterminé.

« Le site et les gens ici à Santiago ont été formidables. La chaleur et le vent ont eu raison de certains d’entre nous, » a commenté Taylor après la journée de qualifications. « Il est temps de se recentrer et de se préparer pour les matchs par équipe et individuels des prochains jours. »

Deux archères d’arc nu ont représenté le Canada dans la division féminine. Brooke Daigle et Angela Foley se sont classées 15e et 16e, respectivement. Daigle a terminé la ronde 720 avec un score de 452 ; elle affrontera Fawn Girard des États-Unis dans sa première ronde éliminatoire jeudi. Foley a réalisé un score de 436 et jouera contre la Chilienne Nicole Tolmo. Le match devait initialement avoir lieu en fin d’après-midi mardi, mais en raison de problèmes techniques, il a été reporté.
