Ontario Athletes The Largest Contingent on Team Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games

TORONTO (July 22, 2021) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) would like to congratulate the 371 athletes and their coaches named to Team Canada for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. CSIO would like to recognize the 170 Ontario athletes, numerous Ontario coaches, and countless Ontario-based support staff representing Canada at the Games. Ontario athletes comprise an incredible 46% of the Canadian Olympic Team, the most of any province or territory!

Among the Canadian athletes competing at the Games, 146 members of the Team have received support from CSIO during their athletic career on the high performance development pathway. CSIO works or has worked with these athletes and their coaches to optimize their performance and enhance their ability to succeed on the international stage. This includes the delivery of best-in-class sport science services such as strength and conditioning, sport nutrition, mental performance, biomechanics and performance analysis, physiology, sport medicine and athletic therapy, and access to world-leading training facilities.

CSIO would also like to congratulate the 65 athletes on Team Canada who have been a part of CSIO’s Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI) program. OHPSI is a program designed by CSIO and funded by the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, to provide sport science and sport medicine services to provincial athletes who are best capable of achieving future international success on senior national teams in targeted winter and summer sports. The OHPSI investment also contributes to funding support for athlete participation in competition and training, coach / technical leadership support and professional development, and enhancing a sports’ daily training environments.

CSIO wishes all of the athletes, coaches, and support staff representing Canada the best of luck at the Games!

We will be cheering for you – Go Canada Go!

QUOTE

“We are extremely proud of all of the Canadian athletes named to Team Canada for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Having such a large representation of Ontario athletes on the team is a testament to the strong provincial high performance sport system. The past year has been extremely difficult for our athletes, with disruptions to their training and the delay of the Games, but our athletes are resilient and ready to shine in Tokyo. A big congratulations also goes out to all of the coaches, technical leaders, practitioners, and support staff who adapted and innovated in order to support our athletes throughout the pandemic. We know they will all make Canada proud!”
