TORONTO (January 25, 2021) – On Monday, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) named Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, Thomas Hall, as Director, Communications and Media Relations. Effective Monday, February 1, 2021, Hall will report to Andrew Baker, Vice President, International Relations and Public Affairs. Hall will lead the COC’s communications function with responsibility for the development and implementation of the department’s long-term strategy.

The 38-year old Pointe-Claire, Québec native represented Team Canada as a national sprint canoe paddler for almost 20 years, highlighted by a bronze medal performance in the men’s C-1 1,000m event at Beijing 2008. He is also a two-time Pan American Games medallist earning gold and bronze at Santo Domingo 2003.

”I’m thrilled to be joining the COC’s International Relations and Public Affairs team,” Hall said. “It’s an exciting time at the COC and in Canadian sport. The opportunity to work with this team to share that excitement with Canadians is truly a privilege.” 

Hall was promoted from his role as Senior Manager, Game Plan having joined the COC in 2018. A core tenant of the program is that well-rounded athletes not only perform better, but also make better transitions to life after sport. During his three years leading Game Plan, the athlete wellness program grew its athlete outreach by more than 160 per cent. Hall will make a gradual transition to ensure that athletes are fully supported until his successor is hired. 

“Tom’s extensive knowledge of the sport system, his commitment to athletes coupled with his background in communications and journalism make him a strong asset for the COC in this role,” said Chief Executive Officer David. “The skills that led to his success on the field of play continue to serve him and the COC well in this phase of his career. We are fortunate to have Tom as one of 11 Olympic and Paralympic athletes working at the COC, and I am thrilled to see his progression in the organization.”

Holding a Masters of Journalism from Carleton University, Hall has extensive media and communications experience. He has worked as special projects editor at Canadian Geographic as well as developed communication plans for private businesses and sport stakeholders. His writing has been featured in many reputed media outlets such as Canadian Geographic, the Toronto Star, the Ottawa Citizen and the National Post. 

He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Canoe Kayak Canada and the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC), as well as the IOC Athlete365 Career+ Steering Committee.

TORONTO (25 janvier 2021) – Le Comité olympique canadien (COC) a procédé lundi à la nomination du médaillé de bronze olympique des Jeux de Beijing 2008, Thomas Hall au poste de directeur des communications et des relations médias. À compter du lundi 1er février 2021, Hall relèvera d’Andrew Baker, vice-président des relations internationales et des relations publiques, il dirigera l’équipe des communications et sera responsable de l’élaboration et de la mise en œuvre de la stratégie à long terme du département.

L’athlète de 38 ans originaire de Pointe-Claire au Québec a représenté le Canada en canoë de vitesse pendant plus de 20 ans, période au cours de laquelle il a notamment remporté une médaille de bronze à l’épreuve masculine du C-1 1000 mètres aux Jeux de Beijing en 2008. Il est aussi double médaillé des Jeux panaméricains après avoir décroché l’or et le bronze à Santo Domingo en 2003.

« Je suis emballé de me joindre à l’équipe des relations internationales et des affaires publiques, a déclaré Hall. Le COC et le sport canadien traversent actuellement une période extraordinaire et l’occasion de travailler avec cette équipe pour partager notre engouement avec les Canadiens est un véritable privilège. »

Thomas Hall a été promu au poste de gestionnaire principal du programme Plan de match après s’être joint au COC en 2018. Au cours de ses trois années à la tête de Plan de match, le programme de mieux-être visant les athlètes a accru son rayonnement par plus de 160 pour cent auprès des athlètes. Hall assurera une transition graduelle vers ses nouvelles responsabilités pour garantir que les athlètes profitent d’un appui entier jusqu’à ce que son ancien poste soit pourvu.

« Sa connaissance approfondie du système sportif, son engagement envers les athlètes et son parcours en communications et en journalisme font de lui un solide atout pour le COC dans cette responsabilité, affirme David Shoemaker, chef de la direction du COC. Les aptitudes qu’il a développées et qui l’ont conduit au succès en compétition lui seront utiles et serviront le COC dans ce chapitre de sa carrière. Nous sommes privilégiés de compter Tom parmi un groupe de 11 athlètes olympiques et paralympiques travaillant au COC et je suis heureux de voir sa progression au sein de notre organisation. »

Détenteur d’une maîtrise en journalisme de l’Université Carleton, il a accumulé une vaste expérience dans le domaine des médias et des communications avant son arrivée au COC. Il a travaillé comme responsable de la rédaction de projets spéciaux au magazine Canadian Geographic et il a travaillé sur les plans de communications d’entreprises privées et d’intervenants du sport. Ses textes ont été publiés dans nombreuses publications de renom comme Canadian Geographic, le Toronto Star, l’Ottawa Citizen et le National Post.

Il siège actuellement au sein du conseil d’administration de Canoe Kayak Canada et du Centre de documentation pour le sport (CDS), ainsi qu’au sein du comité directeur du programme Athlete365 Career+ (Carrière+) du CIO.
