ASSINIBOIA, SASK. — The title drought is over. For the first time in 18 years, a team from New Brunswick is hoisting the national mixed curling trophy.
Fredericton’s Team Rene Comeau captured the title at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship at Assiniboia Curling Club in Saskatchewan.
Comeau, vice-skip Jennifer Fenwick, second Alex Robichaud, and lead Katie Vandenborre of the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton secured a 6-5 win over Ontario’s Team Sam Mooibroek of Kitchener-Waterloo on Saturday afternoon.
New Brunswick won on a challenging last rock, coming around the opposition stone in the top 12-foot and tapping the shot stone far enough for the win.
“What’s going through my mind is I have two of the best sweepers in the world (Robichaud and Vandenborre). So, I had to give it to them. It was a tough shot. I could just see a piece of the pin. I had to throw a draw to the button and just tap them a hair. What a team shot. What a way to end it,” Comeau said.
New Brunswick flipped the hammer in the fifth end with a blank. That eventually set the team up with the last rock for the final end. In the sixth, the team capitalized on a missed Team Mooibroek comearound, setting up a draw for two.
“We said going into the fifth that if it was a tie game, we would love a blank. It worked out that we had the opportunity to go for the blank and we did it. It went right according to our game plan,” Comeau said. “And then that deuce in six was huge. My sweepers – and a special shoutout to Katie – made that shot for me. I didn’t make that shot; they did. That gave us a huge advantage.”
Team Mooibroek managed the seventh end well. The team made a back-house tap through a tight port, scoring two to tie the game entering the final frame. Ontario challenged New Brunswick at every step in the eighth. But Team Comeau prevailed in what will be remembered as one of the most exciting Canadian mixed ever played.
This is New Brunswick’s third Canadian Mixed title. The last came in 2007 with Team Terry Odishaw; the first came in 1994 with Team Grant Odishaw.
New Brunswick opened with a first-end deuce after Ontario missed its last-rock double. Ontario replied in the second, with skip Mooibroek making consecutive draws for a deuce. Both teams were forced in the third and fourth. New Brunswick drew for a single, while Ontario missed two long angle raises on seven stones in the four-foot circle.
Team Comeau will represent Canada at the 2026 World Mixed Curling Championship (dates, location TBA by World Curling). The event returns to the calendar after being omitted due to Olympic qualifiers played this season. Canada leads all nations with three world gold medals. The 2024 event was in Aberdeen, Scotland.
“I’m going to get emotional. They’re three of my best friends. I’ve known them forever, competed with them. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else,” Comeau said.
Team Jason Ackerman of Saskatchewan secured the bronze, controlling the match throughout and posting an 8-3 win over Manitoba’s Team Sean Grassie of Winnipeg.
