Winnipeg (February 9, 2020) – Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau achieved a personal best at the National Team Selection event held this weekend in Winnipeg, finishing first in the Women’s Open event.
Morissette has been training and competing for several years as both a junior and an elite athlete so this win is one that she has been building towards for several years.
“I am very happy to win my first national title and I am excited to see what the next events bring,” said Morissette.
Morissette faced first seed Christine Richardson of Winnipeg in the gold medal match, winning in two games with scores of 15-6, 15-11. Juliette Parent of St. Jacques de Montcalm, QC defeated Cassie Prentice of Macrorie, SK in the third place match 15-8, 15-12.
In the men’s open event, the top three seeds finished in order. Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau defeated Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge in Saturday’s final in three games with scores of 9-15, 15-7, 11-1. Murray has now won several consecutive national team selection events.
Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon finished in third place with a win over Kurtis Cullen of Brandon with scores of 15-4, 15-3.
Results from the National Team Selection Event will be used to determine teams for international competition in 2020 including the Pan Am Championships and World Championships. They will also impact nominations for Sport Canada Athlete Assistance funding.
The National Team Selection Event ran concurrently with the 46th Annual Keystone Classic which offered several skill and age categories. Close to 40 players from Manitoba and Saskatchewan took part in this tournament.
