MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Canada’s best short track speed skaters begin their journey to Beijing 2022 with the 2021 Canadian Short Track Championships presented by Intact Insurance, which will take place at the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal on August 21, 22, 25, 28 and 29.

This year’s Canadian Short Track Championships – the first national level short track competition on Canadian ice since February 2020 – will serve as the selection event for the Special Olympic Qualification Competitions (SOQC) Racing Pool. To be eligible to be nominated to the 2022 Olympic Games Team, skaters must first qualify to the SOQC Racing Pool at this event.

All members of the media interested in covering the event need to apply for accreditation using the online form. The number of media members allowed on-site may be limited due to COVID-19 public health measures, so please be sure to register as soon as possible. The deadline to submit your media accreditation request is August 15, 2021.

Any questions related to media accreditation should be directed to Alain Brouillette. Additional details on a pre-event media day (tentatively scheduled for August 17) will be made available in the coming weeks.

The 2021 Canadian Short Track Championships will feature the country’s top 20 skaters per gender and will be used to crown national champions. The results from this event help select the members of the National Team and NextGen Team for the 2021-2022 season, while also serving as the selection event for the Special Olympic Qualification Competitions (SOQC) Racing Pool, which will be comprised of a maximum of 12 athletes (6 male and 6 female). To be eligible to be nominated to the 2022 Olympic Games Team, athletes must first qualify to the SOQC Racing Pool at this event.

This five day competition will see skaters complete each of the three individual distances (500m, 1000m and 1500m) three separate times. Skaters will be allocated ranking points based on their position after each of the nine events, which will be used to calculate their overall ranking at the end of the competition. Skaters will be selected for the SOQC Racing Pool based on the criteria established in the 2022 Short Track Olympic Selection Policies and Procedures.
