Taekwondo Canada – Power named President of diverse Board that includes five new Directors from world of finance, sport management, marketing, business and government

 

OTTAWA—Master Phil Power was elected as President of a new-look Board of Directors responsible for guiding Taekwondo Canada into the future. Power, along with five new Directors, will bring a variety of professional skillsets to the Board, Taekwondo Canada announced on Friday.

 

Power, who hails from Halifax, previously served as Taekwondo Canada’s Secretary on the organization’s Board of Directors, will build on his past experiences on the Board in his term as President.

 

“I’m extremely proud to carry the torch for Taekwondo Canada with the dedicated leadership team and staff we have in place to shape a promising new era for the organization that will be focused on community alignment, communication and transparency,” said Power, who takes over from Wayne Mitchell (Saskatchewan).

 

“Our team has laid the foundation for our future by implementing a new strategic plan that is driven on excellence in sport and business. We have a long road ahead to achieve our goals, but I am honoured to have the opportunity to continue the work that has already been done with our sport and government partners in an effort to put more Canadian taekwondo athletes on the international podium, in addition to, growing the sport.”

 

Power understands leadership and the importance of building community relationships through his professional and sporting life. A police officers with the Halifax Regional Police where he is employed as a patrol officer and trainer, Power brings nearly three decades of taekwondo experience to his new position.

 

Holding a fifth-degree black belt, Power owns and operates a taekwondo school in his hometown, is a poomsae athlete himself, a coach and referee. He has also invested countless volunteer hours to a variety of committees at both the provincial and national level and started a taekwondo community outreach program for at risk youth.

 

David Badulucco (British Columbia), Sandra de Montigny (Quebec), Jessica Scarlato (Ontario), David Mazzone (Ontario), and Guanbin Yan (British Columbia) bring a variety of valuable skillsets to their first term on the Board.

 

Badulucco will take on Secretary responsibilities. A CPA, CA designation specializing in taxation for Grant Thornton LLP in Vancouver, Badulucco will combine his passion for sport and professional experience to support Taekwondo Canada’s goal of showing organizational excellence.

 

Sandra de Montigny brings a wealth of financial experience to her position of Treasurer on the Board over the next three years where she will help ensure the financial stability of Taekwondo Canada. De Montigny started her career at KPMG where she spent four years on the auditing team and five more years as a Senior Manager in Mergers and Acquisitions. She joined Montreal-based Cesium Telecom in 2014 as a VP of Finance.

 

Jessica Scarlato, David Mazzone and Guanbin Yan were elected as Directors at Large. 

 

Originally from Richmond Hill, Ont., Scarlato is the Manager of High-Performance Teams for Athletics Canada where she guided Canada’s athletics squad at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2016 Olympic Summer Games, as well as the 2015 Pan American Games. Scarlato has extensive event management experience working with Equestrian Canada, Hockey Canada and Artistic Swimming. He has also served on various sport-related committees.

 

Mazzone will bring a strong marketing mind to the new leadership group. The Toronto-based retail marketing executive brings more than one decade of experience working with many of Canada’s leading brands including Mark’s, Canadian Tire, and Hudson’s Bay. He is currently the VP of Marketing for Staples Canada where he leads all marketing functions from digital to traditional media streams. David is extremely passionate about taekwondo and the positive impact the sport has on Canadian youth.

 

Yan rounds out the newly-formed diverse Board. An experienced senior project and business manager with more than one decade of government experience during her 20-year professional career that has taken her to Canada, Singapore and China. Utilizing her expertise in financial management, project management, human resources and business governance, Yan will play a key role in ensuring the future of Taekwondo Canada has excellence at its core. The Appointed Bencher with the Law Society of British Columbia over the last two years, Yan is a passionate volunteer who has contributed her time to the Canadian Cancer Society, Red Cross and many sport events across the country.

 

“This is a highly-accomplished Board of Directors who bring a fresh approach, a tremendous amount of passion for high-performance sport and are strongly rooted in Canada’s corporate community across the country,” added Power. “Together, we are determined to open doors and provide support to the staff, athletes and coaches in our community – ensuring they have the tools, resources and best practices required to achieve success.”

 

Taekwondo Canada will name a vice-president during a Board meeting scheduled in the fall.

 

Taekwondo Canada is the National Sport Governing Body for Taekwondo in Canada. We are recognized by World Taekwondo, Pan American Taekwondo Union, and are members of the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee. Taekwondo Canada is supported by Sport Canada. Taekwondo Canada sends national teams to the Olympic Games, World Taekwondo Championships, Pan Am Taekwondo Championships, Pan Am Games, World Taekwondo Junior Championships, Poomsae World Championships, Pan Am Poomsae Championships, and is also targeting the 2020 Paralympic Games.
