Montréal, May 4, 2024 – Margo Erlam and Aimee Wilson had a great time at the Canada Cup in Calgary on Saturday, as they always do when they compete in the synchronized 3m event together. This afternoon, the two Canadians ended their day on the third step of the podium, in front of their hometown crowd.

The duo’s fifth and final dive was their best of the day. They were awarded 60.30 points, bringing their total to 262.20, good for third place and the bronze medal. Long Yiping and Si Yajie of China won gold, while Kyndal Knight and Samantha Pickens of the USA secured silver.

“We didn’t dive the way we usually do, but our main goal was to enjoy ourselves while representing our country. For us, that in itself was a great opportunity,” said Erlam, who is originally from Calgary.

Although she has a back injury, Wilson had no intention of missing out of the event being held in her hometown. Her words reflected those of her teammate.

“I was just glad to get to compete! I know I can dive better than this, and that my next dives will be better. This wasn’t our best performance, but we had fun, as always, which is the most important thing!”

Katelyn Fung narrowly misses top five

Elaena Dick, Katelyn Fung, and Julianne Boisvert competed in the 10m platform event in Calgary. On Thursday, the same trio dominated the repechage to earn their spots in today’s big final.

Fung obtained Canada’s best result today, finishing sixth. The Ontarian earned a total of 276.00 points. Her highest-scoring dive of the day was her first, for which she received 63.00 points.

“Honestly, I was so nervous about this final! I tried to be as confident as possible,” admitted Fung. “The qualification rounds didn’t go as well as I had hoped, so my confidence took a bit of a hit. I’m glad I was able to execute five good dives in the final.”

With the Olympic trials coming up on May 17-19 in Windsor, Ontario, Fung plans to apply the lessons she learned from her mistakes and come back even stronger for the event.

“I needed to regain my focus [after the qualification rounds]. My coach Yihua Li often tells me I just need to trust myself. I know my dives well, and I don’t need to change anything in competition. I just have to take it one dive at a time, and be confident,” explained the 20-year-old athlete.

Julianne Boisvert finished 10th with 245.95 points. Her compatriot Elaena Dick was right behind her, in 11th place with 242.25 points.

Jiang Linking of China (325.75) secured the top spot, followed by Else Praastering of the Netherlands (297.05) and Lu Wei, also of China (293.35).

The host country was also well represented in the men’s competitions on Saturday. Five of the 12 divers in the individual 3m finals were Canadian. Cédric Fofana obtained Canada’s best result, finishing eighth with 358.00 points. Thomas Ciprick (357.55), Ernest Braitenbach (329.65), Tazman Abramowicz (319.60), and Olivier Gauthier (307.65) occupied the next four spots in the standings, respectively.

Jack Ryan of the USA won the gold medal, ahead of China’s Hu Yukang and Mexico’s Juan Manuel Celaya Hernandez.

The Canada Cup will wrap up on Sunday with four more finals. Wilson and Erlam will both compete in the women’s individual 3m event. They will be accompanied by Amélie-Laura Jasmin and Mathilde Laberge. On the men’s side, Abramowicz and Braitenback will join forces for the synchronized 3m contest. Arnaud Corbeil, Luc Goertzen, and Ciro Mejia will compete in the 10m platform final.
