Montréal, April 5, 2025 – Ontario’s Kate Miller was the only Canadian competing in the individual 10m platform final on Saturday at the World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico. The 19-year-old finished eighth with 277.35 points, tying her best career result in an individual World Cup event.
She held the same spot at the first World Cup of the 2024 season, in Montréal in March 2024.
Miller, who held eighth place following Thursday’s qualifiers, appeared confident as she entered the finals on Saturday. She demonstrated great consistency throughout the competition, earning 67.20 points for her final dive—her best of the day—to secure the eighth-place spot.
The event was dominated by China’s Yuxi Chen (419.35) and Hongchan Quan (414.40), who finished first and second, respectively. Andra Spendolini Sirieix (337.70) secured the bronze medal.
Earlier on Saturday, Quebec’s Matt Cullen and Benjamin Tessier competed in the men’s synchronized 10m platform final, where they finished sixth with 369.51 points.
The two Canadians set the tone with their second dive, earning 52.80 points, the best score of the round, and moving into provisional third place.
They remained consistent until their second-to-last dive, with which they experienced some difficulties. They then slid into sixth place following their final attempt.
It was the first World Cup of Cullen’s career, and he learned a lot from the experience of competing against the world’s best alongside Tessier.
“It had a been a long time since Benjamin and I had dived together. Our training went well, and we were pretty consistent for the first part of the competition, but unfortunately, we flubbed one of our last dives, and that’s what made the difference. But still, I think we can leave here with our heads held high,” said Cullen.
“We did very well, but we missed out on the same dive, so we lost a few spots in the standings. Everything was going fine until we messed up that one dive. But we learned a lot, and it’s clear that we have good potential together,” added Tessier.
Zifeng Zhu and Zilong Cheng of China won gold with 449.49 points, edging out Randal Wallars Valdez and Kevin Berlin Reyes of Mexico (435.45) who gave the Chinese duo a good run for their money. Neutral athletes Ruslan Ternovoi and Nikita Shleikher (400.32) rounded out the podium.
The Guadalajara World Cup will conclude on Sunday with the men’s 10m platform and 3m synchronized springboard finals and the women’s 10m synchronized and 10m individual finals.
