Speed Skating Canada – McLean and Dubreuil finish season ranked eleventh in 500m

SALT LAKE CITY, USA – On the last international racing day of the long track speed skating season, Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa, Ont. captured a bronze medal in the mass start at the ISU World Cup Final in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Blondin worked with her teammate and fellow Ottawa native Isabelle Weidemann to lead the pack throughout the race. In a sprint to the finish, Blondin was passed by Irene Schouten of the Netherlands and Korea’s Bo-Reum Kim to finish in a time of 8:00.540 and take the bronze.

It was Blondin’s second third-place result in the mass start on the World Cup circuit this season and she won silver in the event at the World Single Distance Championships. She ends the season ranked fourth in the distance.

Weidemann was sixth in the race, having earned five sprint points during the intermediate sprint laps. It was her best result of the season and moved her into 16th overall in the distance. Toronto’s Jordan Belchos skated the men’s mass start, coming in sixteenth to finish the season ranked 14th.

Japan’s Miho Takagi won the 1500m with a new world record time of 1:49.840. Blondin was twelfth in the same race to end the season ranked eleventh on the World Cup circuit. The men’s 1500m record also fell, with Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands setting his second world best mark in as many days with a time of 1:40.176.

Heather McLean of Winnipeg, Man. completed 500m in 37.37 to finish ninth in the distance. On the men’s side, Laurent Dubreuil of Lévis, Que. posted a time of 34.437, good enough for eighth. Canada’s sprint specialists both ended the season ranked eleventh overall in the distance.
