Speed Skating Canada – CALGARY, ALBERTA – After four days of competition, Ivanie Blondin’s final medal tally stands at five, having captured gold in both the 1500m and mass start events on the last day of the Canadian Long Track Championships, presented by Intact Insurance. David La Rue and Hayden Mayeur were also crowned Canadian Champions, in the men’s 1500m and mass start, respectively.

La Rue (Saint-Lambert, QC) earned his second title of the year with a time of 1:44.96 in the 1500m. He was closely followed by Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) and Tyson Langelaar (Winnipeg, MB), who captured the first senior championships medal of his career.

The podium in the ladies’ 1500m closely matched those from the long distance events earlier in the weekend, with Blondin (1:55.56) and Isabelle Weidemann, both of Ottawa, taking the top two spots and Valérie Maltais (Saguenay, QC) closing out the trio. Maltais and Weidemann switched spots in the mass start, earning silver and bronze respectively.

Mayeur’s Canadian Champion title in the men’s mass start was a career first for the Toronto native. Crossing the line in second and third position, having battled through a crowded race, were Kaleb Muller (Cranford, AB) and Jake Weidemann (Ottawa, ON).

The results of the Canadian Championships will be used to select the team representing Canada on the ISU World Cup circuit this season.“I woke up this morning and was feeling pretty tired, but it’s motivating knowing how well I’m skating. I got three personal bests over the weekend and our team this year is really strong. Valérie [Maltais], Isabelle [Weidemann] and I, and our whole training group, have really meshed well together this year. It has created such a positive environment and I think the results reflect that.”

Ivanie Blondin
“I started the weekend off pretty slowly and wasn’t really where I wanted to be, so to finish off with my first-ever Canadian Champion title is awesome. During most of the race, I tried to stay towards the front and work with the ‘big dogs’. I conserved my energy and then found a gap in the last lap that shot me to the front.”

– Hayden Mayeur
“I went out really hard, which is what I had to do today to put myself in a good spot. It was a well executed race and super tight at the end, but I’m very glad to be sharing the podium with these two guys [La Rue and Gélinas-Beaulieu]. It’s my first time being on the podium at Canadian Championships, so it’s a really big confidence booster heading into the season.”
