BC Sports Hallof Fame – HONOURING THE PAST

Honoured Member E.V. “Billie” Mitchell passed away on February 13th, 2019 at the age of 103.

Mitchell was a legend in Canadian figure skating circles, whose accomplishments and innovative ideas have helped shape the business of Canadian figure skating into the organization it is today.

In 1961, Mitchell was elected chair of the British Columbia Section of the Canadian Figure Skating Association, becoming the first woman on the national board of directors. She was then elected the first woman on the executive level of the CFSA, and three years later, its first female president.

Billie was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in the Builder category for Figure Skating in 1998. Our sincere condolences to the Mitchell family.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR: A Year of Special Anniversaries

Tom Mayenknecht, Chair, Board of Trustees
BC Sports Hall of Fame

With individual tickets going on sale today for the Class of 2019 BC Sports Hall of Fame Induction Gala presented by Victory Square Technologies, May 23rd at the Vancouver Convention Centre, it’s a great time to talk about the many milestones in the history of sports in British Columbia.

For one, it’s the 50th Anniversary of the first BC Sports Hall induction event held in Vancouver in 1969. It’s also another reminder of the enduring legacy and importance of story-telling in BC sports and heritage. The BC Sports Hall of Fame was itself founded under the leadership of community leaders and visionaries such as Eric Whitehead back in 1966 (we celebrated that 50th Anniversary three years ago, marking the 50 Golden Moments in BC sports history).

Yet we’re not the only ones celebrating major milestones this year! Read more
