CAAWS Gender Equity Checklist for 2019

We need more champions for girls and women in sport and physical activity. How are you going to advance gender equity in your organization this year? Here are some small ways you can get started: 

1. Recommend the CAAWS newsletter to a friend. 

2. Take advantage of online learning opportunities like the Keeping Girls in Sport e-module. 

3. Read the most recent edition of the Canadian Journal for Women in Coaching. 

4. Book a CAAWS workshop or presentation for your staff or for your AGM. 

5. Plan a celebration for International Women’s Day in March or International Day of the Girl in October.  

6. Host a CAAWS webinar-watching party with your coworkers.  

7. Look for opportunities to mentor the young women around you, and help them reach the next step of their sport journey. 

8. Make retention and leadership of girls and women part of your organization’s strategic plan.

Spotlight
Celebrating organizations that #ChampionChange

Last February, Sport Canada announced a goal of achieving gender equality in sport by 2035 and put $30 million dollars down to help get there. In the meantime, sport organizations are making strides forward in plenty of powerful ways. 

Here are three moments that inspired us in 2018: 

1. Organizations like Rugby Canada, Triathlon New Brunswick, Ontario Soccer, and others introduced gender equity statements into their board bylaws, ensuring that generations of sport organization leaders will reflect the diversity and perspectives of sport participants. (LINKS?) 

2. Universities like Guelph and McGill kicked off their respective She’s Got Game and Kerr Family Women in Sport programs, putting real money and policy change behind the women athletes and coaches of their institutions.  

3. Women like Karina LeBlanc, Hayley Wickenheiser, and Dale Tamara Plett stepped into new leadership roles this year and continue to use their platform to inspire others in the world of sport.
