Gymnastics Canada Appoints Michael Downey as Interim CEO

OTTAWA, ON, January 30, 2025 – Gymnastics Canada (GymCan) is pleased to appoint Michael Downey as interim Chief Executive Officer, effective February 3, 2025. This appointment underscores GymCan’s commitment to cultural change and its dedication to advancing safe sport, individual well-being, and community development.

As interim CEO, Downey will oversee all aspects of GymCan’s operations, including financial management, strategic planning, member services, and staff relations. He will work closely with the Board of Directors, management, athletes, and provincial and territorial partners to drive GymCan’s mission forward. He will report directly to the Board of Directors.

Recognizing the importance of strong leadership during its ongoing operational and cultural transformation, GymCan’s Board has determined that appointing an interim CEO will provide the necessary stability and momentum while a comprehensive search for a permanent leader is conducted.

“We are thrilled to have Michael Downey step into this role at such a pivotal time for GymCan,” said Wendy Smith, Chair of the Board of Directors. “His extensive experience leading sports organizations and his proven ability to drive transformation will be invaluable as we continue our evolution and ensure continuity of operations.”

Downey brings more than three decades of leadership in sport, including 15 years as CEO of Tennis Canada across two terms and four years as CEO of the Lawn Tennis Association (British Tennis) in London, England. He has also held executive sales and marketing roles with the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs and served as President of Molson Ontario/Western Canada and Molson S&E. Though he retired from full-time employment in 2023, he remains active as a consultant and volunteer.

A recognized leader in organizational transformation, Downey has consistently driven growth and innovation throughout his career. “GymCan was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he said. “Gymnastics is a foundational sport in Canada with tremendous potential. I look forward to

supporting the transformation of GymCan and preparing the organization for its next permanent leader.”
