Fofana finishes 29th in men’s 3m springboard prelims
Cedric Fofana finished 29th in the men’s 3m springboard event on Monday at the Olympic Games and will not move on to the semifinals.
The 17-year-old who was making his Olympic debut scored 225.35 in Monday’s preliminary round at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
Despite it being his first Games, the Montreal native said he expected more from his performance.
“It’s really not the desired result. People will say that it’s part of the game, but I’m really disappointed with my performance. It’s still my first Olympic Games, but I would have liked to do more,” Fofana said.
Fofana said he was happy with his first dive – the back two-and-a-half somersaults – but that it wasn’t his day for his other five dives.
China’s Zongyuan Wang and Siyi Xie finished first and second following the preliminary round while Rommel Pacheco Marrufo of Mexico finished third. The Top 18 divers from the preliminary round qualified for the semifinals.
Though he didn’t have the success he was looking for in the pool, Fofana said his overall Olympic experience was a memorable one.
“Being at the Olympics is a childhood dream. The experience is really good,” Fofana said. “In the village, I was able to meet friends that I had made from all over the world, it had been a long time since I had the chance to see them, it’s really pleasant.”
Going forward, Fofana plans to use his Tokyo experience to help him have better success in Paris 2024.
“It’s a goal to go to Paris, there’s no doubt about that. I’ll know what to expect with the Tokyo experience. I was jumping into a vacuum when I came here. The experience I’m going to bring to Paris is going to be very beneficial.”
