Team includes three skaters from both Quebec and Alberta, one each from Manitoba and British Columbia
CALGARY, ALBERTA – Speed Skating Canada is proud to announce the long track skaters selected to represent Canada at the upcoming ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships in Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland.
The eight Canadian skaters will first participate at the ISU Junior World Cup Final in Minsk, Belarus from February 15-16, before competing in Poland from February 21-23.
The team slated to take the ice is comprised of Alexa Scott (Clandeboye, Man.), Laura Hall (Salmon Arm, B.C.), Hee Won Son (Calgary, Alta.), Emmanuelle Côté (Chicoutimi, Que.), Frank Roth (Calgary, Alta.), Hubert Marcotte (Pont-Rouge, Que.), Jack Deibert (Calgary, Alta.) and Cedrick Brunet (Gatineau, Que.).
A two-time Canadian champion, Scott is set to make her third appearance at the World Junior Championships, having previously competed in Bormio, Italy and Salt Lake City, Utah. Fellow national champion Roth, along with Deibert and Marcotte, also represented Canada at last season’s event in Italy, while the remainder of the skaters will be making their international long track debut.
After competing at last year’s ISU World Junior Championships in short track, where she finished 13th in the 500m, Son is set to appear in the same event on the long track side. The Calgary native will become the first skater in recent memory to accomplish the impressive feat.
The eight skaters earned their positions on the team based on their results at the recent 2020 Canadian Junior Long Track Championships, presented by Intact Insurance. Scott and Roth were the respective overall champions, earning the most points among their respective fields to capture the titles.
Joining the athletes overseas are coaches Muncef Ouardi (Quebec City, Que.) and Tyler Williamson Derraugh (Winnipeg, Man.), along with physiotherapist Mark Jesney (Saskatoon, Sask.).
“I’m really excited. It’s such an awesome opportunity to be able to
represent your country and I’m just grateful to be able to do it for a second year. I’m aiming for a medal, hopefully in the 500m, which would be really nice. And we have a really strong Team Sprint group this year with a lot of great sprinters, so a medal in that would be fantastic.” – Frank Roth
“It always feels good [to make Team Canada]. I got to represent Canada in Enschede at the ISU Junior World Cup 2 earlier this season, so it’s great to make the team again and get to go to somewhere new and flex what I’ve got. I’m going to be going hard for a medal.”
– Alexa Scott
““It’s an honour for me to get the chance to measure myself against the best skaters from other countries. And above that the fact that I’ll get to do it alongside three of my teammates – two who were with me last year and one who I’ve been training with since the summer – is pretty cool! For sure a medal would be incredible, but I’d be quite happy with a top-8.”
– Hubert Marcotte
“I’m really excited to represent Canada in my second World Junior Championships, this time in long track. Since I haven’t been training in long track for too long, my main goal is to train hard for the next month and get the highest rank possible at the competition. But most of all, I just want to enjoy the experience!”
– Hee Won Son
“I am so excited for the opportunity to compete against the fastest juniors in the world as a part of Team Canada. I am looking forward to the experience and seeing what I can accomplish at this competition.”
