Sport for Life Society – GATINEAU, QC – Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild will share his wisdom with attendees of the 2019 Sport for Life Canadian Summit, speaking to its theme “Moving to Action”. The Summit will be held in Gatineau, Quebec on January 23 and 24.

Dr. Littlechild is a long-time champion of athletics, and has been honoured multiple times for his contributions to the world of sport. For over 40 years he has sought to build bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people through athletics, elected office and law. A member of the Order of Canada, he has also been inducted into eight sports’ Halls of Fame, including Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Littlechild was also a contributor to the Aboriginal Long-Term Participant Development Pathway, which was jointly created by the Aboriginal Sport Circle and Sport for Life.

“We are thrilled to have Grand Chief Littlechild as a speaker for the Sport for Life Canadian Summit. He has been such an influential leader nationally and internationally on the rights of Indigenous peoples and his message will tie into our theme of Moving to Action as we all have a responsibility to be leaders in the inclusion of Indigenous participants,” says Richard way, Sport for Life CEO. “We look forward to learning from him how we can collectively Move Reconciliation in the work we are all doing.”

Having served as a commissioner during the Truth and Reconciliation hearings, Dr. Littlechild has repeatedly shared his own story as a residential school survivor and, in his words, “thriver”. He has credited sports as a positive influence in his life, telling Alberta Native News in 2015 that his life “might have continued to take a negative turn, but when I found sports it was the beginning of a new era for me. I was saved by sports.”

The regular registration rate has been extended until January 20. Register here. Learn more about the Summit at sportforlifesummit.ca
