National Indigenous Coaching Awards Honour Veronica McDonald and Richard Lush

OTTAWA, ON, November 5, 2020 – The Coaching Association of Canada™ (CAC) recognizes long-time karate coach Denis Beaudoin, ChPC®, and NCCP Coach Developer Kylo Harris, RPC, for their outstanding achievements in coaching tonight during the virtual celebrations of the Petro-Canada™ Sport Leadership Awards Gala.

Hosted by the CAC in partnership with Petro-Canada, a Suncor business, the annual gala honours coaches who exemplify the values and competencies of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and their positive impact within the sport sector in Canada. It is held during the Petro-Canada Sport Leadership sportif conference, Canada’s annual conference for coaches, researchers, sport executives, and administrators.

Beaudoin:  A lifetime dedicated to sport and coaching 
Recipient, 2020 Geoff Gowan Lifetime Achievement Award

In a remarkable coaching career spanning more than 40 years, Sensei Denis Beaudoin has demonstrated a lifetime dedication to sport, coaching, and coach development. Since opening the Beaudoin Karaté Gatineau dojo in 1978, Beaudoin has been a role model and inspiration for Gatineau youth, leading many athletes to success on the provincial, national, and international levels. Over his tenure, Beaudoin has trained and mentored more than 30 NCCP coaches at his dojo, and in 1994 he founded the Karate Sport-Study Program at the École Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau to grow the community of karate instructors and athletes in Gatineau. Beaudoin’s dedication and success stems from his philosophy that karate is not just a sport, it is a school of life for each athlete as an individual human being.

Harris:  True Ambassador of the National Coaching Certification Program
Recipient, 2020 National NCCP Coach Developer Award

Veteran NCCP Master Coach Developer, Kylo Harris is recognized as a dedicated ambassador for the NCCP who inspires lifelong learning and continued self-improvement in the coaches and NCCP Coach Developers he trains in Manitoba, Ontario, Nunavut, Yukon, and the North West Territories. A passionate advocate for youth participation in sports, Harris has created community programs which promote and cultivate accessibility of sport, gender equity, volunteerism, and youth leadership development. He works passionately to provide accessible education and learning opportunities for coaches so they can create positive sport experiences for their athletes.

Other award recipients to be honoured at the Gala include Rowing Canada Aviron, recipient of the Sheila Robertson Award for sport organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to coach development in Canada, and 23 coaches who will receive Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards in celebration of athletes and teams that have achieved medals at world championship events.

National Indigenous Coaching Awards

The CAC is also honoured to support the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) in presenting the National Indigenous Coaching Awards at the virtual awards gala. These awards recognize a female and male Indigenous coach (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) who have demonstrated a personal commitment to fair play and sportsmanship. This year’s recipients are Veronica McDonald and Richard Lush, each of whom received a $1500 bursary to support their coaching professional development.

Geoff Gowan Lifetime Achievement Award: Denis Beaudoin, ChPC, Karate Canada (Gatineau, QC)

The Geoff Gowan Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a lifelong commitment to coaching and coaching development and is presented to an individual who has fostered a positive public image of coaching, enhanced the role of the coach within the public in Canada, and who is a role model for future generations of coaches. The award was created in 1996 to honour former CAC President Geoffrey Gowan, CM, PhD. The trophy is housed at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary, where the recipient will be featured for the year. Previous recipients include figure skating coach Manon Perron, ChPC, diving coach Dany Boulanger, ChPC, and ringette trailblazer, Phyllis Sadoway, ChPC.

“Denis has made an incredible contribution to sport in Canada and we are honoured to present him with this lifetime achievement award,” says Paul Carson, Chair of the Board, Coaching Association of Canada. “For 25 years, the CAC has presented the Geoff Gowan Award to many esteemed and deserving coaches whose contribution to coach education and development has echoed Geoff’s legacy. And this year is no exception.”

National NCCP Coach Developer Award: Kylo Harris, RPC (Beausejour, MB)

Launched in 2012, the National NCCP Coach Developer Award recognizes an outstanding individual who has gone above and beyond to develop trained and certified NCCP coaches in their community. The recipient embodies the “best of the best” NCCP Coach Developers across Canada. Past recipients include NCCP Master Coach Developer Greg Henhawk, of the Bear Clan from Six Nations of the Grand River, Dr. Andy Van Neutegem, and NCCP Master Coach Developer Kathy Brook, ChPC.

“Kylo has demonstrated a consistent commitment to lifelong learning in his approach as an NCCP Coach Developer, one of the underlying philosophies of the National Coaching Certification Program,” says Lorraine Lafrenière, CEO of the CAC. “He is a true and passionate ambassador of the NCCP, and we are grateful for his ability to guide, inspire, and develop future coaches in Canada.”

Sheila Robertson Award: Rowing Canada Aviron

The Sheila Robertson Award recognizes the outstanding contributions to coach education, recognition, and professional development by a National Sport Organization (NSO) or Multi-sport Service Organization (MSO). The CAC presents the award each year to an NSO or MSO that consistently demonstrates the value of coaching through its organizational mandate and communications activities throughout the year to its internal and external audiences. Previous recipients include Tennis Canada, Baseball Canada, viaSport British Columbia, and the Canadian Lacrosse Association.

Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards

Petro-Canada will recognize 23 coaches from 10 unique sports with the annual Coaching Excellence Awards. These prestigious awards recognize coaches whose athletes have achieved a medal at World Championships, Olympic or Paralympic Games, or the Special Olympics World Games. Petro-Canada has honoured 1,259 coaches with this award since 1986.

“The recognition we are jointly celebrating tonight is a testament to the importance of the NCCP program and the significance it can have within an individual, a coach, an athlete and an inspired team,” says Kristina Schaefer, Director, Petro-Canada Brand Loyalty. “Each recipient has been instrumental in building courageous and successful athletes, and we are proud to honour the accomplishments of these exceptional coaches. Veronica McDonald et Richard Lush reçoivent les Prix nationaux des entraîneurs autochtones

Ottawa (Ontario), le 5 novembre 2020. – L’Association canadienne des entraîneursMC (ACE) soulignera le parcours exceptionnel de Denis Beaudoin, EPA® et de Kylo Harris, entraîneur enregistré et responsable du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE ce soir lors de l’édition virtuelle du Gala des Prix du leadership sportif Petro-CanadaMC.

Organisé par l’ACE en partenariat avec Petro-Canada, une entreprise de Suncor, le gala annuel honore les entraîneurs qui incarnent les valeurs et les compétences du Programme national de certification des entraîneurs (PNCE) et qui ont une incidence positive sur la communauté sportive canadienne. Il a lieu durant la conférence Petro-Canada Sport Leadership sportif, le rendez-vous annuel des entraîneurs, chercheurs, dirigeants et administrateurs sportifs du Canada.

Denis Beaudoin : une vie dédiée au sport et à l’entraînement 
Récipiendaire du Prix Geoff Gowan pour l’ensemble des réalisations 2020

Durant une carrière remarquable de plus de 40 ans, le sensei Denis Beaudoin s’est consacré au sport, à l’entraînement et à la formation des entraîneurs. Depuis l’ouverture de son dojo, Beaudoin Karaté, à Gatineau en 1978, M. Beaudoin est un modèle et une inspiration pour les jeunes de sa région et a aidé plusieurs athlètes à réussir sur la scène provinciale, nationale et internationale. Il y a formé et encadré plus de 30 entraîneurs du PNCE. En 1994, il a également fondé le programme Sports-études en karaté à l’école polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau pour faire grandir la communauté d’instructeurs et d’athlètes de ce sport à Gatineau. Le dévouement et la réussite de M. Beaudoin sont ancrés dans sa philosophie, selon laquelle le karaté n’est pas qu’un sport : c’est une école de la vie pour l’athlète qui favorise son évolution personnelle.

Kylo Harris : véritable ambassadeur du Programme national de certification des entraîneurs
Récipiendaire du Prix national du responsable du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE 2020

Formateur chevronné de responsables du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE, Kylo Harris est un ambassadeur dévoué du PNCE qui motive les entraîneurs et les responsables du développement des entraîneurs qu’il forme au Manitoba, en Ontario, au Nunavut, au Yukon et dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest à poursuivre leur apprentissage et leur perfectionnement leur vie durant. Ardent promoteur du sport chez les jeunes, M. Harris a créé des programmes communautaires qui favorisent l’accessibilité au sport, l’équité des sexes, le bénévolat et le leadership. Il travaille fort pour offrir aux entraîneurs des occasions d’apprentissage et de formation qui les aident à créer des expériences sportives positives pour leurs athlètes.

Seront également honorés lors du gala Rowing Canada Aviron, à qui l’on remettra le Prix Sheila Robertson, qui souligne le travail des organismes sportifs ayant démontré un engagement à former des entraîneurs au Canada, et 23 entraîneurs ayant mené leurs athlètes ou leur équipe sur le podium à des championnats mondiaux, qui recevront le Prix d’excellence Petro-Canada aux entraîneurs.

Prix nationaux des entraîneurs autochtones

L’ACE est heureuse de s’associer au Cercle sportif autochtone, qui remettra les Prix nationaux des entraîneurs autochtones lors du gala virtuel. Ces prix visent à reconnaître le travail d’une entraîneure et d’un entraîneur autochtone (Première Nation, Inuit, Métis) s’étant personnellement engagés à favoriser l’esprit sportif. Cette année, les récipiendaires sont Veronica McDonald et Richard Lush, qui recevront chacun une bourse de 1 500 $ pour leur perfectionnement professionnel.

Présentation des lauréats du Gala des Prix du leadership sportif Petro-Canada 2020

Prix Geoff Gowan pour l’ensemble des réalisations 2020 : Denis Beaudoin, EPA, Karaté Canada (Gatineau, Qc)

Le Prix Geoff Gowan pour l’ensemble des réalisations souligne le dévouement de toute une vie à l’entraînement et à la formation des entraîneurs. Il est décerné à une personne qui a présenté une image publique positive du métier et mis en valeur le rôle des entraîneurs au Canada, en plus d’être un modèle pour les futures générations d’entraîneurs. Ce prix a été créé en 1996 en l’honneur de l’ancien président de l’ACE, Geoffrey Gowan, CM, Ph. D. Le trophée du prix est exposé au Panthéon des sports canadiens, à Calgary, où le lauréat sera mis en vedette pendant l’année. Les trois derniers lauréats sont : Manon Perron, entraîneure professionnelle agréée de patinage artistique, Dany Boulanger, entraîneur professionnel agréé de plongeon et Phyllis Sadoway, entraîneure professionnelle agréée de ringuette et pionnière de ce sport.

« La contribution de Denis au système sportif canadien est inestimable, et nous sommes honorés de lui présenter ce prix pour l’ensemble de ses réalisations, souligne Paul Carson, président du conseil d’administration de l’Association canadienne des entraîneurs. Au cours des 25 dernières années, l’ACE a remis le Prix Geoff Gowan à de nombreux entraîneurs estimés dont la contribution à la formation et au perfectionnement des entraîneurs a fait écho à l’héritage de M. Gowan. Et cette année ne fait pas exception. »

Prix national du responsable du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE : Kylo Harris, entraîneur enregistré (Beausejour, MB)

Créé en 2012, le Prix national du responsable du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE rend hommage à des personnes exceptionnelles qui ont déployé des efforts remarquables pour former et certifier des entraîneurs de leur communauté dans le cadre du PNCE. Le lauréat incarne l’esprit et les caractéristiques des meilleurs responsables du développement des entraîneurs au Canada. Parmi les récipiendaires précédents, on compte Greg Henhawk, membre du clan de l’Ours de la bande des Six Nations de Grand River et formateur de responsables du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE; Andy Van Neutegem, formateur de responsables du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE; et Kathy Brook, entraîneure professionnelle agréée.

« En tant que responsable du développement des entraîneurs du PNCE, Kylo a montré qu’il accordait une grande importance à la formation continue, une des philosophies sur laquelle s’appuie le Programme national de certification des entraîneurs, affirme Lorraine Lafrenière, chef de la direction de l’ACE. Il est un ambassadeur passionné du PNCE, et nous sommes heureux de pouvoir compter sur lui pour encadrer, inspirer et former les entraîneurs canadiens de demain. »

Prix Sheila Robertson : Rowing Canada Aviron

Le Prix Sheila Robertson souligne la contribution exceptionnelle d’un organisme national de sport (ONS) ou d’un organisme de services multisports (OSM) à la formation, à la reconnaissance et au perfectionnement professionnel des entraîneurs. L’ACE le décerne tous les ans à un ONS ou à un OSM qui a valorisé le travail des entraîneurs par ses activités de formation et de communication interne et externe au cours de l’année. Parmi les récipiendaires des années précédentes, notons Tennis Canada, Baseball Canada, viaSport British Columbia et l’Association canadienne de crosse.

Prix d’excellence Petro-Canada aux entraîneurs

Petro-Canada soulignera le travail de 23 entraîneurs issus de 10 sports en leur remettant le Prix d’excellence aux entraîneurs.
