Dates announced for 2022 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Dubai
(TORONTO, Ont.) The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) announced that the 2022 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships will take place from November 16-27, 2022, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The World Wheelchair Basketball Championships will feature over 300 wheelchair basketball players representing 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams.
“We are pleased to be able to confirm the dates of the 2022 IWBF World Championships for later this year,” said IWBF President Ulf Mehrens. “We continue to work with the hosts UAE to ensure we will be able to put on a world-class event as the ultimate showcase for wheelchair basketball and Paralympic Sport and provide the highest-level environment for our elite players.”
Canada’s men’s and women’s teams will compete in the Americas Cup in late July to determine qualifying for the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships. Four men’s and three women’s qualification spots will be up for grabs at the Americas Cup.
The Zonal spots were determined from the final standings of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
The World Wheelchair Basketball Championships is held every four years. At the 2018 tournament in Hamburg, Germany, the Canadian women finished fifth while the men were 12th.
