Sport Manitoba – Daily Media Outlook – Phase Two

Day Eight Recap

Yesterday, Team Manitoba brought home a few more medals from athletics, tennis, and rowing. Our boys baseball team played two games yesterday, and won their first against Saskatchewan and unfortunately fell short to Alberta in the evening 13-9. Our female volleyball team lost their first game of the day to Alberta but redeemed themselves in the afternoon when they defeated Yukon in straight sets. Meanwhile, our male volleyball team also defeated Northwest Territories in straight sets. The crowd was on fire at Team Manitoba’s first wrestling match of the Games, where Manitoba had five male wins and four female wins but unfortunately could not catch up to Alberta in the final scores of the duels.

Our diving and triathlon athletes had a day filled of practice as they prepare for a big day of competition tomorrow.

Story/Interview Opportunities

Athletes/Teams/Coaches To Watch

  1. Yesterday, our wrestling team faced off against Alberta. This was an extra special match for our head coach Dave Elder as he was facing off against his brother Owen Dawkins, the head coach of the Alberta team. Unfortunately, Manitoba was bested by Alberta in the match but the two will be reunited later in the Games to compete against each other again.
  2. Rowing athlete Katie Sierhuis is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed when she was 13 years-old. Before her diagnosis, Katie was the assistant captain of her hockey team and during her treatments, her fitness weakened. It took a lot of hard work and determination to get back to where she was. She started the sport of rowing in 2017, and competed in the Canada Summer Games that same year. Katie is actively involved in dragon boat races where “Katie’s Crew” raises funds (more than $130,000) and awareness for cancer. Katie Sierhuis’ brother Tyler Sierhuis is also on the team as well.
