TORONTO (September 7, 2021) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) would like to congratulate the Canadian Paralympic Team including the athletes and guides, coaches and support staff on a great performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The Canadian Team delivered inspiring, passionate performances as they showed the nation the power of resilience, adaptability, and determination in the wake of unprecedented times.

Team Canada finished 19th in the medal standings with 21 medals – 5 Gold, 10 Silver and 6 Bronze at the Games.

Team Canada’s success was highlighted by two super-star athletes who won multiple medals at the Games: Aurélie Rivard, Swimming (2 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze) and Brent Lakatos, Athletics (4 Silver)

The Games saw 3 Ontario-hometown athletes contribute to 3 medals (1 Silver, 2 Bronze) won by Team Canada.

Many Canadian athletes also achieved personal bests and set Canadian, Paralympic, and World Records at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. There was an astounding number of Canadian Top-5 and Top-8 performances, each one full of passion, athleticism, and determination. These performances, along with many others from young and first-time Paralympians signal a bright future for Canada at the Paralympic Games and international competition.

As we look ahead to Beijing 2022 this winter, Paris 2024 and beyond, CSIO is excited to support para sport and Paralympic athletes on their athletic journey.

“Congratulations goes out to all of the athletes, guides, coaches and support staff on a job well done. You are an inspiration to Canadians of all ages and abilities and have represented this nation with pride. CSIO is proud to support so many of our Paralympic athletes throughout their athletic careers and personal journeys. We are excited to continue our work providing best-in-class sport science, sport medicine and performance pathway services to our athletes and teams as they turn their attention to preparations for Paris 2024.”
