January 11, 2022 - CBC/Radio-Canada, Canadas Olympic Network, today revealed new details about the national public broadcasters programming plans for the OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES BEIJING 2022.
The current state of the pandemic has Canadians focused on their health and well-being. Our team at CBC is just as concerned about this as we prepare to produce our second Olympics in six months under pandemic conditions. Our number one priority is keeping our team safe and healthy, whether they be in Beijing, Toronto or Montreal, said Chris Wilson, Executive Director, Sports and Olympics, CBC. That said, we also believe that the Olympic Winter Games can once again provide some relief and escape for Canadians and unite the country around the performances of Team Canada just as Tokyo did last summer. With this in mind, were offering around-the-clock coverage of Beijing 2022 across all of our platforms, giving audiences the choice to watch and follow however, wherever and whenever they want. We look forward to the start of the Games and experiencing them with audiences from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
CBCs coverage of Beijing 2022 will be as comprehensive as any other Olympic Games with more than 2400 hours of live content across the public broadcaster’s multiple platforms. In addition to TV broadcasts on CBC and partner networks TSN and Sportsnet, audiences will be able to stay connected and informed via CBC Gem, the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices and CBCs Beijing 2022 website which will feature live-streaming of the broadcasts, as well as non-TV events. The dedicated site, cbc.ca/beijing2022, will house full event schedules, results, athlete bios and features, daily updates and more. Plus, exclusive coverage will be provided by CBC Sports, including in-depth reports, highlights, digital series and on-demand replays of the biggest moments and events.
Broadcasting live from CBC in Toronto for 23 hours of daily coverage throughout the Games, CBCs Beijing 2022 broadcast team is composed of trusted personalities known to Canadians. Having assembled the most experienced commentators and sport analysts in the country, this award-winning team is set to provide the world-class storytelling and event coverage that audiences value and have come to expect from a CBC Olympic Games broadcast. OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES PRIMETIME
7 p.m.12 midnight ET (49 p.m. PT)
As the day begins in Beijing and events get underway, Olympic Winter Games Primetime will get audiences right into the action, with a focus on hockey, figure skating, curling, alpine skiing, snowboarding, bobsleigh and early medal events. Having covered 15 Olympic Games for CBC, five as host, veteran broadcaster Scott Russell brings his vast experience, passion and knowledge to the Primetime block.
OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES OVERNIGHT
126 a.m. ET (9 p.m.3 a.m. PT)
Live sport is the primary focus of Olympic Winter Games Overnight, including uninterrupted coverage of events as they unfold midday in Beijing. Including: long track speed skating, biathlon, cross country skiing, alpine skiing and snowboarding.
OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES MORNING
6 a.m.12 p.m. ET (49 a.m. PT)
Returning for her fifth Olympic Games on CBC as host, Andi Petrillo brings tremendous knowledge of both the athletes and the game to whatever sport shes covering. Known for her quick wit and knack for storytelling, Petrillo will provide audiences with live competition in Beijing primetime, including freestyle skiing, short track speed skating, bobsleigh, curling, figure skating and major event finals. The morning show will also feature in case you missed it overnight updates, medal talk and athlete interviews.
SAMSUNG HOCKEY SHOW
12 noon1 p.m. ET (910 a.m. PT) Live on CBC, TSN and Sportsnet; repeats nightly on sports channels
Harnarayan Singh, P.J. Stock and Hailey Salvian will lead the SAMSUNG HOCKEY SHOWs magazine format through the days biggest hockey stories from Beijing. The daily panel will include a mix of womens and mens coverage, and special guests to review the days competition and preview the upcoming games as Canada looks to maintain its place atop the hockey world.
BEIJING TODAY presented by Toyota
16 p.m. ET (10 a.m.3 p.m. PT)
The dynamic duo of two-time Olympian and World Champion hurdler Perdita Felicien and Andrew Chang return to CBCs host desk for BEIJING TODAY. This daily program will provide audiences with the major storylines of the day, athlete profiles and previews of upcoming events. Felicien is no stranger to the Olympic stage having competed in Sydney and Athens, and covering the past four Games as part of the CBC Olympics broadcast team. Meanwhile, veteran anchor Chang returns to the studio desk for his fourth Olympic Games as co-host.
For audiences of all ages, CBC Kids will continue with their award-winning coverage at cbckids.ca/olympics. Kids and families are encouraged to visit the site leading up to and throughout the Winter Games to get caught up on the top storylines, play fun games, watch informative videos and learn more about their favourite athletes, sports, and the people and country of China. Kids and families can also visit CBCKidsNews.ca for regular news coverage of the Games.
CBC News will also keep Canadians informed of breaking stories with a small team of reporters on the ground in Beijing including Adrienne Arsenault, Anthony Germain, Steven D’Souza, Kris Reyes and Lisa Xing. Audiences can tune in for live coverage daily on The National, CBC News Network, CBC Radio, cbcnews.ca, the CBC News app and on local CBC TV newscasts.
