MILWAUKEE, USA – On the first day of the inaugural ISU Four Continents Speed Skating Championships, Canadian athletes collected two individual and one team medal. Brooklyn McDougall found herself on the podium twice with a silver in the 500m and a gold in the Team Sprint alongside Noémie Fiset and Maddison Pearman. Alex Boisvert-Lacroix also finished second in the 500m.
The medals marked the first two senior international recognitions of McDougall’s career. The native of Calgary skated a time of 38.533 in the 500m to come second only to Korea’s Min Sun Kim. Kim’s teammate Hyun-Yung Kim rounded out the podium.
In the Team Sprint, McDougall joined forces with Fiset (Quebec City, QC) and Pearman (Ponoka, AB) to cross the line in a winning time of 1:29.82. They were joined on the podium by the teams from Korea and China. The Canadian skaters in the men’s Team Sprint finished in fourth place.
Boisvert-Lacroix (Sherbrooke, QC) skated in the final pair of the men’s 500m and finished second behind his pair-mate, Korean Joon-Ho Kim, with a time of 34.730. Roman Krech of Kazakhstan captured the bronze medal, one hundredth of a second ahead of Canadian Laurent Dubreuil (Lévis, QC).
The ISU Four Continents Championships continues on Saturday with the 1500m and Mass Start events for both men and ladies. The competition will be streamed live on CBC Sports beginning at 14:00 ET.
