Water Polo Canada – (Lima, Peru – July 30, 2019) – The Lima 2019 Pan American Games officially kicked off last Friday and the Canadian water polo squads have just made their way to Peru in preparation for the tournament to start August 4, 2019.

The Lima 2019 Pan American Games are a crucial step towards Tokyo 2020 with first place in each category automatically qualifying for the Olympic Games.

The Canadian women just wrapped up the FINA World Championships in Gwangju where they finished in ninth place. In Lima, they will compete in Group B alongside Cuba, Peru, and Mexico. Group A will be composed of the United States, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. With the defending champions, USA, already qualified for the 2020 Olympics, Canada will be looking to finish at the top and clinch its spot for Tokyo. The Canadian women’s team has won a medal at every edition of the Pan Am Games, including a gold medal in 1999 in Winnipeg and a silver medal in 2015 in Toronto.

The competition will be fierce in the men’s category as many teams will vie for the title and qualification for Tokyo 2020. The Canadian men earned bronze at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, with USA and Brazil finishing first and second

respectively. The men’s national team will face Puerto Rico, the United States, and Cuba in the preliminary round before heading to the playoff phase where the stakes will be particularly high for the Canucks.
