Canadian Paralympic Committee – Ottawa, March 21, 2019 – The International Paralympic Committee announced today that CEO Xavier Gonzalez will be leaving the organization after 17 years at the helm.

Statement from Marc-André Fabien, President, Canadian Paralympic Committee:

The Canadian Paralympic Committee would like to thank Xavier for his incredible and immense work over the past several years to grow the Paralympic Movement, which would not be where it is today without him. He was a leading force behind the IPC’s evolution into a world-leading global sport organization, and the continued expansion of the Paralympic Games and the Para sport high performance system. Truly, it is remarkable to look back at everything Xavier and his team have accomplished.

It was a pleasure working with Xavier and we value his leadership and friendship. As the IPC grew, so too did the CPC and we have worked together on so many initiatives. He has been a true partner in building Para sport across the world and he is leaving behind such a strong legacy and a bright future. We wish him all the best with the next stage of his career, and we know that although he is moving on from the CEO role his passion for the Paralympic Movement and its athletes will keep him close.

Statement from Tony Walby, Chair, Canadian Paralympic Athletes Council:

Xavier was such a significant figure within the Paralympic Movement for so many years, and we thank him for giving Para athletes more opportunities to shine on the global stage. It is amazing to see how the Paralympic Games has grown in the last two decades with more media coverage and corporate support, and that is in large part to his direction. This is such an exciting time for Paralympic sport and Paralympic athletes, and this was built up through years of the right leadership. All the best to Xavier in the future!
