Archery Canada – OTTAWA (Archery Canada) – The 2019 Canadian Outdoor 3D Archery Championships concluded on Monday in Prince Albert, Sask., with the crowning of 32 titlists and the announcement of the national team for the upcoming World Championships in Lac La Biche, Alta. (Sept. 2-8).

“The event was well organized from start to finish,” said Aaron Bull, Vice President 3D Programs at Archery Canada. “The Timberland Bowbenders did a superior job of setting up 80 targets that truly tested even the most experienced archers over the championships. Thank you to the Bowbenders and all of the volunteers.” 
 
The squad that will represent Canada at 3D Worlds early next month was selected based on combined results from the 2018 and 2019 Nationals.

Women’s Compound: Monica Higgins (Lethbridge, Alta.), Jessica Beaumont (Neuville, Que.), Catherine Faulkner (Calgary); alternate Ashley Casperson (Washago, Ont.).
 
Men’s Compound: Cory Smandych (Calgary), Chase Martin (Grande Prairie, Alta.), Cameron Herbert (Lacombe, Alta.).
 
Women’s Instinctive Bow: Trudy Dryden (The Glades, N.B.), Caroline Laue (Edmonton), Katie Britton (Pinantan Lake, B.C.). 
 
Men’s Instinctive Bow: Fred Streleoff (Williams Lake, B.C.), Marc Britton (Pinantan Lake, B.C.), Dan Mobbs (150 Mile House, B.C.); alternate Ray Neumeyer (Nobleford, Alta.).
 
Women’s Longbow: Miranda Sparkes (Logan Lake, B.C.), Jessica Mobbs (150 Mile House, B.C.), Cornelia Squirra (Roblin, Man.).

Women’s Barebow: Heather Leduc (Moose Jaw, Sask.), Lana Perry (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Susan Gehlert (Lac La Biche, Alta.).
 
Men’s Barebow: Alan Hindle (Perth-Andover, N.B.), Tyler Moore (Moose Jaw, Sask.), Duane Filipuzzi (Lethbridge, Alta.).
 
“The Canadian national team we selected should be very competitive with the worlds’ best and to medal at these championships here on home soil is our goal,” said Bull. “We will see on this team some athletes who bring previous experience at the world championship level as well as some new talent who will have their first experience at Worlds this year.”
 
Of the group, Faulkner, Dryden, Sparkes, Herbert and Marc Britton captured gold in their respective categories over the long weekend in Prince Albert.
 
Dryden was one of six archers who successfully defended their Canadian outdoor 3D titles from 2018, along with fellow female competitors Sandie Plashka (Compound Master 60), Angela Hay (Compound Fixed Pins) and Robin Squirra (Traditional Pre-Cub), as well as Clay Laronde (Compound Junior) and Ty Thurow (Compound Cadet) in men’s action.
 
Joelle Thurow also reached the top of the podium for the second straight year, prevailing in Women’s Compound Cub after winning the Pre-Cub tournament last summer in Truro, N.S.
 
For their part, seven athletes claimed their second 3D national title of 2019 this weekend, adding to their triumphs at the Canadian Indoor Championships held in late April in Brandon, Man. The list includes Lacey Moore on the women’s side (outdoor: Hunter / indoor: Compound Fixed Pins) and male counterparts Cohen Quick (Compound Pre-Cub), Dan David (Compound Master 60), Kristofer Skelly (Compound Fixed Pins), Steve Keys (outdoor: Known 50 / indoor: Compound Master), James Frigon (Hunter) and Bevan Bailey (Traditional Master).
