EDMONTON, AB (February 10, 2025) – From February 6 to 9, the Booster Juice Recreation Centre in Edmonton’s Terwillegar neighbourhood served as the home of the 2025 Skate Canada Trophy, where several young Canadian stars stole the spotlight.
Last year’s winners in the pre-novice pairs event, Jaslynn Wong and Nico Conforti took top honours in the novice category this year. The British Columbia duo climbed to the top of the podium with a score of 112.18 points.
“Over the past few weeks, we’ve been training really hard, and we’re proud to have shown what we’re truly capable of today. We had a lot of fun during the competition,” said Conforti.
Quebec ice dancers Annabelle Théroux and Rafael Gossard (99.78 points), who also won their pre-novice competition last year, were back on top of the podium in the novice division. Although they hit some snags early in the competition, the two athletes kept pushing forward, coming back strong to end the weekend with the gold medal.
In the women’s event, Quebec’s Camila Volkova took the top spot on the podium in the novice category. Although she placed second in the free program, the lead she had built up in her short program was enough for her to secure gold, with a total of 133.75 points.
“I was nervous before I stepped onto the ice, but I quickly calmed myself down, and I skated well. I really wanted to land my triple flip this weekend, and I did, so I’m extremely proud of myself,’ said the gold medallist.
On the men’s side, the Ontarians dominated the podium, with Ethan Luo leading the pack. He finished the competition with a total score of 155.54—and a new Canadian record.
“I set two new personal bests this weekend, and I’m extremely proud of that. It’s a huge step in the right direction. I’ve been working very hard with my coach, and I’m seeing clear results. I didn’t want to focus too much on the Canadian record, but I’m very happy to have beaten it,” he stated.
In the pre-novice category, Mathéo Harvey of Quebec won the men’s gold medal, also breaking a Canadian record. He finished the competition with a total of 115.42 points.
“I’m very proud of myself. I feel like I’m in a dream. I still can’t quite believe it. I didn’t know I had broken the Canadian record. That makes me really happy, especially since I know I still have room for improvement,” he said.
Amberly Wang won the women’s pre-novice event with a total score of 108.51. It was consistency that made the difference for the Ontarian, who finished third in the short program and second in the free program.
In the pre-novice ice dance event, Kayla and Logan Bowman of Ontario clinched the top spot in each of their programs to secure the gold medal. They finished the competition with 81.92 points.
“We’re very, very happy! We skated well all weekend. Our goals here were to skate fluidly and improve our footwork, and I think we accomplished that,” said Logan.
In the pre-novice pairs event, Quebec’s Marykim Ranzi and Enryck Legault came out on top. The duo, who held provisional first place following the short program, earned 57.83 points for their free program. Their total score of 92.47 was good for gold.
“Our short program really exceeded our expectations, and I’m happy about our free program too, which we’ve been struggling with in training lately. Most of all, we wanted to gain experience here, since it’s our first year competing together. We weren’t aiming for any specific results,” explained Legault.
