TORONTO – Many from Canada’s Paralympic team and other national team members look to ramp up their training at this year’s Canadian Swimming Championships.
While it overlaps with the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, the national event is a key competition for those whose moments are still to come.
Starting Wednesday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, the seven-day event (six pool and one open water) will look to crown national champions from a pool of 925 athletes from 147 clubs across the country.
Swimmers will compete in age groups ranging from 13-14 (women) and 14-15 (men) up to the senior level.
Pool events run until Monday, with preliminaries starting at 9:30 a.m. ET and finals at 5:30 p.m. daily. Open water races are set for next Tuesday at the Welland International Flatwater Centre.
Most notably, Paralympic team members such as Nicholas Bennett (Parksville, B.C.), Aly Van Wyck-Smart (Toronto), and Abi Tripp (Kingston, Ont.) will be racing in Toronto just weeks before heading to the 2024 Paralympic Games which run from Aug. 28-Sept. 8.
Junior national team swimmers will be using this meet similarly. Athletes will be preparing for the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Canberra, Australia, and the 2024 Open Water Junior World Championships in Alghero, Italy which are both only a few weeks after nationals.
