Speed Skating Canada – ALGARY, ALBERTA – Six of Canada’s top long track speed skaters will take to the ice at the Olympic Oval in Calgary this weekend for the 2019 ISU World Allround Speed Skating Championships.

Leading the team on the ladies side is Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa, Ont. whose best overall result in her six previous Allround Championships appearances was on home soil in Calgary, where she placed sixth in 2015. Blondin will look to build on her silver medal in the mass start at the World Single Distance Championships earlier this month.

She is joined by Valérie Maltais of Saguenay, Que. and fellow Ottawa native Isabelle Weidemann, both of whom will make their debut in this competition. Maltais, a three-time Olympian in short track speed skating, has seen early success since switching disciplines this year. Weidemann has also had a breakout season, earning three individual medals to place third in the long-distance World Cup standings.

Veteran skater Ted-Jan Bloemen of Calgary, Alta. is making his eighth appearance in the Allround Championships. He previously finished just off the overall podium in fourth place during the 2009-10 season (representing the Netherlands) and came fifth for the Canadian team in 2015-16. Bloemen has found his form toward the end of this season, earning a bronze medal and fifth-place finish in his last two distance events.

Also representing Canada for the men are Jordan Belchos of Toronto, Ont. and Sherbrooke, Que.’s Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu. This will be Belchos’ third appearance at the Allround Championships, while Gélinas-Beaulieu joins the field for the second consecutive year.

Over two days of competition, the field of twenty-four athletes per gender will participate in four distances – the 500m and 1500m, plus the 3000m and 5000m for the ladies and the 5000m and 10,000m for the men. Skaters earn points based on their time in each race and a combined total is used to crown the Allround Champions.

Cindy Klassen was the last Canadian to be crowned Allround Champion, doing so in both 2003 and 2006. The most recent overall podium finish at Championships was earned by Christine Nesbitt, who finished in bronze medal position in 2012. Nesbitt will be honoured during the event on Saturday with an induction into the Olympic Oval’s Hall of Champions.

CBC Sports and Radio-Canada will live stream the event on Saturday (1:45PM EST) and Sunday (2:00PM EST). Races will also be televised on Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM EST as part of CBC’s Road to the Olympic Games program.

A detailed event schedule and live results can be found on the ISU Results Portal. Tickets for both days of competition are still available at www.speedsk8.ca.
