Swimming Canada – CLOVIS, Calif. – Canada’s Sydney Pickrem collected her third victory this week at a Pro Swim Series event placing first on Friday in the women’s 200-m breaststroke. Markus Thormeyer of Delta, B.C. added a bronze in the men’s 100-m backstroke.

Pickrem, Thursday’s winner in both the 100-m breaststroke and 400-m individual medley, was first at every split and clocked two minutes and 25.52 to top the 200 breast. Melissa Rodriguez of Mexico stayed close the whole way and was second in 2:25.54. Her compatriot Esther Gonzalez Medina was third in 2:29.44.

‘’I’m pretty confident,’’ said Pickrem, a world championship bronze medallist in 2017 tuning up for next month’s worlds in South Korea. ‘’It’s been a good year so far. I’m excited to focus on myself a little bit more and just trying to represent my best for Team Canada.’’

Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson of Ottawa was seventh.

In the men’s 100-m backstroke, Americans were 1-2 with Matt Grevers of the U.S. first in 53.59 and Justin Ress second in 54.25. Thormeyer, also a world championship medallist two years ago, followed in 54.50. Thormeyer was in two finals Thursday placing fourth in the 200-m freestyle and eighth in the 50-m backstroke.

Emily Overholt of the High Performance Centre-Vancouver took fourth in the 200-m butterfly after two top-three’s on Thursday. She was second to Pickrem in the 400-m IM and third in the 200-m freestyle.

Alexandre Pratt of Calgary and Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria were fourth and fifth in the men’s 400-m freestyle and Haley Black of Prince George, B.C. was fourth in the 50-m butterfly.

MacKenzie Padington of Campbell River, B.C., was sixth in the women’s 400-m freestyle.

Competition ends Saturday.
