Volleyball Canada – Men’s beach team finishes fourth at Pan Am Games

Lima, Peru. July 30, 2019: Today Aaron Nusbaum (Aurora, Ont.) and Mike Plantinga (Langley, B.C.) finished fourth at the Pan American Games beach volleyball event after a 0-2 (17-21, 18-21) loss to Nicolas Capogrosso and Julian Azaad of Argentina.

“We need to improve on our consistency. We started off the second set really well, got a bit lost on the way and had our chances in the end, but just didn’t finish,” said Nusbaum. “They played a good game at the end there.”

The match was fairly even, but Argentina held the advantage in attacks (26-22) and aces (4-0); Canada did better in blocking with seven points compared with three by Argentina.

“I felt I was getting in their face, blocking a lot of balls,” said Plantinga. “But, as Aaron said, it was just our lack of consistency that led to us not getting the win.”

Canada beat the U.S. and Venezuela earlier in the playoffs, but fell to Chile in the semis yesterday.

“We’ve had nothing but amazing support from people here and people back home – it’s been great playing in this atmosphere,” said Plantinga.

The women’s team of Amanda Harnett (Burlington, Ont.) and Marie-Christine Lapointe (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.) finished ninth overall in Lima.

Canada also has a women’s indoor team that will compete in the volleyball event (beginning Aug. 07) at Lima 2019.
