Canada has secured their second bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships.
Triples
Emma Boyd (Delta, BC), Baylee van Steijn (Gore’s Landing, ON), and Joanna Cooper (Calgary, AB) came out of the gates firing in the Triples, winning their first 5 matches in the 7-match round robin. After crushing Switzerland (38-6), the trio defeated Wales (16-11), Japan (16-12), Jersey (17-10), and Cook Islands (25-15) before taking their first loss against New Zealand (21-10). The Canadians finished the round robin with a tie against Zimbabwe (17-17), which put them in 2nd place in their pool and enough to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, the trio faced a tough squad from India; India went 7-0 in their section. The Canadians weren’t going to be stopped, as they won the match handily by a score of 20-9 to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, the trio faced New Zealand; the same squad that handed them their only loss in the round robin. The Kiwis had the Canadians’ number though, as they defeated Canada by a score of 9-20. At the World Championships, both teams that lose in the semifinals receive a bronze medal, which means the Canadian trio will be bringing home the bronze.
Singles
Ryan Bester started off the Singles event by defeating Sweden (21-6), Papua New Guinea (21-14), and Sri Lanka (21-2) before picking up his first loss against England (17-21). He quickly rebounded by defeating Japan (21-13), Cyprus (21-3), South Africa (21-17), Botswana (21-5), Zimbabwe (21-9) and Singapore (21-9) to finish the round robin with a record of 9-1.
Bester will compete in the quarterfinals against
Women’s Pairs and Men’s Fours
Kelly McKerihen (Toronto, ON) and Jordan Kos (Regina, SK) finished 5th in their group with a record of 3-3-1 which was not enough to advance to the playoffs.
Cam Lefresne (Enfield, NS), Rob Law (Winnipeg, NS), Owen Kirby (Kitchener, ON), and John Bezear (Kitchner, ON) also finished 5th in their group with a record of 3-4 which was not enough to advance to the playoffs.

About 2023 World Bowls Championships
The 2023 World Bowls Championships will take place on the Gold Coast, Queensland from August 29 – September 10. The event will be held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club, Musgrave Hill Bowls Club, Club Helensvale, Mudgeeraba Bowls Club and Paradise Point Bowls Club. The World Bowls Championships are held every two years, and feature men’s and women’s singles, pairs, triples, and fours.
