Montréal, May 3, 2024 – Just like they did yesterday, several Canadian athletes secured their spots in this weekend’s Canada Cup diving finals in Calgary, Alberta. Four Canadian women will compete in the 3m finals on Sunday, while three Canadian men will take part in the 10m event.

In this morning’s qualification rounds, Margo Erlam obtained Canada’s best result, finishing third to automatically advance to the finals.

Erlam was consistent throughout the competition, earning a total score of 299.10 points. She was surpassed only by China’s Yajie Si (331.95 points) and Shan Lin (323.35 points), who finished first and second, respectively.

“I was pretty happy with my dives, and with my qualifying scores. I made a few errors, but overall, I’m satisfied with what I accomplished. I didn’t expect to finish in the top three today (Friday), but I’ll try to do so again in the finals on Sunday,” said Erlam.

Erlam, who is originally from Calgary but now lives in Saskatoon, acknowledged that the energy of the crowd motivated her to give her all on Friday.

“Several of my friends and family members are here to cheer me on. Also, my mother is one of the competition volunteers. It felt great to have all those people watching me dive, and to be back home in Calgary,” she added.

As for Aimee Wilson, Mathilde Laberge, and Amélie-Laura Jasmin, they had to bide their time a little longer before securing their spots in the big final. The three athletes, who did not make the top six in the qualifiers, received a second chance in the semi-finals.

Laberge obtained the highest score of the three with 260.75 points, which put her in fourth place and allowed her to advance to the big final at her first senior-level international competition.

“It’s encouraging! I’m really happy because I didn’t expect to make it to the finals. When my coach told me I had qualified, I didn’t believe it. I’m really excited. I’m happy to have another chance to show off my dives,” said Laberge.

Jasmin’s fifth place (253.30 points) and Wilson’s sixth (247.85 points) were also enough to see both athletes through to the final.

On the men’s side, Ciro MejiaLuc Goertzen, and Arnaud Corbeil all had to compete in the semi-finals to secure their berths in the finals.

The Canadian men really stepped it up in the semi-finals. Mejia came out in first place, followed by Goertzen and Corbeil, respectively.

Meija secured the top spot with his final plunge, for which he received a score of 69.30, the highest of the round.

On Saturday, Cédric Fofana, Olivier Gauthier, Thomas Ciprick, Tazman Abramowicz, and Ernest Braitenbach will hit the diving tanks early for the men’s 3m finals. Erlam et Wilson will then take part in the 3m synchronized final, followed in the evening by Julianne Boisvert, Katelyn Fung, and Elaena Dick in the women’s 10m final.

The remaining finals will take place on Sunday.
