Montréal, April 26, 2024 – Claude-Olivier Lisé-Coderre, Mathilde Laberge and Lila Stewart starred at the Dresden International Invitation in Germany on Friday. Lisé-Coderre won the gold medal in the B category on the 3m springboard, while Laberge and Stewart teamed up to notch first place in the 3m synchronized event.

After an opening dive that placed him provisionally third, Lisé-Coderre took matters into his own hands, achieving the highest score in each of the last three rounds en route to a combined total score of 446.40 points.

In the qualifying round, divers complete five basic dives and three optional dives. Basic dive scores are added to final dive scores to determine the total score.

The Quebecer obtained his best score of 63.00 points on his last jump in the final. He was joined on the podium by Ukrainians Nazarii Kononenko (428.75 points) and Dmytro Stepanov (420.70 points), who placed second and third respectively.

“It’s a relief! It’s been a long day and it was my first major international competition. I think I managed my stress effectively and performed as well as I did in training. It’s exciting to compare myself with the best in the world and it gives me confidence to know that I’m capable of winning gold against them,” commented Claude-Olivier Lisé-Coderre”.

Also competing in the final, Kash Tarasoff finished sixth with 381.60 points.

Later in the day, Mathilde Laberge and Lila Stewart were taking part in the synchronized 3m springboard event. The Canadians set the tone on their first dive, amassing 45.00 points to claim the provisional top spot.

They then saw the Ukrainians pull off two excellent dives to take control of the competition. But the Canadian duo wasn’t intimidated and saved their best for last. Their final dive earned them a score of 59.94 points and allowed them to climb on top of the podium with a total of 254.70 points.

“It was very exciting to win gold in the final. I couldn’t train as much as I would have liked in the last few days because of an injury. To be able to dive today (Friday) was a great victory, and to win was even better,” said Lila Stewart.

The Saskatchewan native added that she was even happier to have the chance to share this medal with Quebec’s Mathilde Laberge as they are very good friends in everyday life.

“We’ve had the chance to train a little together in the last few weeks, so we had some experience with one another. She’s one of my best friends and it really adds something special to dive and win with her. Mathilde is a tremendous competitor, which is motivating,” added Stewart.

Ukraine’s Yelizaveta Diadiuk and Kseniia Bochek finished second (228.90 points), just ahead of Great Britain’s Zoé Schneider and Aliana Reihs (226.50 points).

Ella Lindsay captures bronze

After placing fourth the previous day in the 1m springboard competition, Ella Lindsay was desperate for a podium finish on Friday. The Nepean, Ontario diver’s wish came true when she claimed the bronze medal on the platform.

After her first two dives on the 7m platform, Lindsay climbed to the 10m tower for her third and last jump of the final, where she recorded her final best score of 51.80 points. This jump put her on the third step of the podium with a total score of 291.50 points.

She was only beaten by Australia’s Maggie Grey (368.80 points) and Great Britain’s Jule Eisenberg (302.35 points).

Lila Gokiert, who won gold the previous day on the 1m springboard, also took part in the final and finished seventh (285.05 points).

Competing in the Group A 1m springboard final, Emmitt Reesor and Chris Booler finished sixth and tenth respectively. Italy’s Matteo Santoro took gold in the category.

Canadians fall just short of the podium

Canadian athletes were also in action at the Indianapolis International Invitational in Indiana. In the 3m synchronized competition, Alberta’s Tazman Abramowicz and Ontario’s Victor Povzner teamed up to represent the maple leaf.

The Canadians came very close to the podium, finishing fourth in the event won by Americans Andrew Capobianco and Quentin Henninger (387.81 points).

Abramowicz and Povzner’s score of 347.91 placed them less than 10 points behind France’s Jules Bouyer and Alexis Jandard (356.97 points), who finished third.

South Korea’s Minhyuk Kang and Seongho Woo (370.11 points) captured silver.

Tazman Abramowicz and Victor Povzner will both be back in action on Saturday in the individual 3m springboard event. Several other Canadian divers will also be on hand.
