As part of their fundamental obligation and responsibility to protect the health and safety of every individual involved in the Canadian Lawn Bowls community, Bowls Canada is issuing a formal statement on the completion of mandatory safe sport training by individuals affiliated with the organization.

The training focuses on preventing and addressing abuse and harassment in sport.  As outlined by the federal government, “affiliated individuals” are defined as follows:

Category 1: Individuals in decision-making positions at BCB

  • BCB Senior Staff
  • BCB Directors

Category 2: Athletes and individuals with direct contact with athletes

  • National Senior Squad Athletes
  • National Development Squad Athletes
  • Parents of underage National Squad Athletes
  • BCB High Performance Staff and Volunteers (including the High Performance Committee)
  • National Coaches: paid and unpaid
  • BCB Appointed Coach Developers
  • Contractors appointed by BCB (with direct athlete contact)
  • Performance Partners (directors, guides, interpreters, etc.) of bowlers with disabilities who are appointed by BCB
  • Nationally accredited umpires
  • Trained and certified NCCP coaches

Category 3: Individuals with no direct athlete contact

  • BCB Staff
  • Host Organizing Committee (HOC) Members
  • BCB National Committee Members
  • National event volunteers

Effective immediately, all BCB Staff, Directors, National Senior and Development Squad members, parents of under-age national squad members, BCB National Coaches, BCB National Committee members, and all nationally appointed coaches, umpires and Performance Partners MUST complete either

Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders Training or Coaching Association of Canada’s (CAC) Safe Sport Training  by March 31, 2021.  It is important to note, that due to extensive revisions in the content, only training taken after April 1, 2017 will be recognized.

Completion of safe sport training will be a requirement for acquiring and maintaining a Trained and Accredited status for all NCCP bowls coaches and national accredited umpires for all on-green activity effective for the 2021 season.

BCB is still working with the Canadian sport community at large to determine exactly what mandatory training will be required of National Championship event volunteers beyond HOC members.

Currently the Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders course fee of $27 is being covered by Bowls Canada for all individuals who take the training through this link. The Coaching Association of Canada Safe Sport training module is currently offered at no charge, and the Respect in Sport for Parents course fee is $12.

For more information on the mandatory Safe Sport training requirements, please see the Bowls Canada position statement.
