Speed Skating Canada – CALGARY, ALBERTA – Two Canadian skaters placed in the top six overall at the 2019 ISU World Allround Speed Skating Championships which concluded on Sunday at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. Ted-Jan Bloemen earned a fifth-place finish while Isabelle Weidemann ended the weekend in sixth.

Weidemann, of Ottawa, Ont., skated personal best times in all four distances over the weekend. On Sunday, she crossed the line in 6:49.68 to finish second in the 5000m and posted 1:55.22 in the 1500m, a time that earned her ninth position.

“I felt pretty strong throughout my races and am excited to finally be taking a big jump forward,” expressed Weidemann. “I was really looking to have fun this weekend. It’s an event I’ve never done before so it was awesome to skate in front of a home crowd which took a lot of the pressure off. I hope to skate another World Allround Championships in the future!”

Calgary’s Bloemen displayed a return to the form that earned him two Olympic medals in 2018, stopping the clock in 12:53.15 during his 10,000m to finish second. His time of 1:46.03 in the 1500m earlier Sunday afternoon was only good enough for twelfth.

Ottawa native Ivanie Blondin also found the top three in an individual distance on Sunday, placing third in the 1500m with a new personal best time of 1:53.59. Despite being ranked sixth after three distances, Blondin did not make the cut for the 5000m and finished in ninth overall.

Czech skater Martina Sáblíková earned her fifth World Allround Champion title after stunning the crowd with a second world record in as many days, this time besting her own 5000m mark set eight years ago with a time of 6:42.01. Completing the Allround podium were last year’s winner, Miho Takagi of Japan, and Antoinette de Jong of the Netherlands.

On the men’s side, Dutch athlete Patrick Roest continued his dominance on Sunday, winning the 10,000m ahead of Bloemen and capturing his second consecutive World Allround Champion title. Norway’s Sverre Lunde Pedersen and Roest’s countrymate Sven Kramer, a nine-time winner of the event, rounded out the top three.

Other Canadian skaters in action on Sunday:

  • Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, Que.) – Sixth in the 1500m (1:44.93); 16th overall
  • Valérie Maltais (Saguenay, Que.) – 16th in the 1500m (1:55.99); 17th overall
  • Jordan Belchos (Toronto, Ont.) – 16th in the 1500m (1:46.69); 17th overall
